Madison: The turnstiles at Gander Mountain are cranking as hunters look for those last minutes supplies just two days before from the start of the gun deer season.
"It's a busy time for us." says Store Manager Cliff Hambleton. "We've still got lots of customers that haven't bought their gear. They're getting their backpacks, they're getting their scents, treestands."
Lt. Peter Owen is stationed at Fort McCoy, and says most of the guys on the base are excited. "I would say a lot of the Fort McCoy population is looking forward to it."
The biggest factor hunters are preparing for is the weather. Because unless you're in an enclosed stand, you need to be prepared to sit in the rain.
"Rain protection has been very popular," says Hambleton. "Gear that repels the water."
"It makes it real difficult to try and plan how you're going to dress and what you're going to do," says hunter Don Desens. "You actually end up breaking into a sweat instead of being cold."
With temperatures expected to be in the 50's, Dave Brown's November beard may keep him too warm. But he's more worried about the hunting. "Could slow things down a lot. Awfully warm."
The owners at Thirsty's in North Leeds hope that if the weather's not great for hunting, "We're hoping that we're really busy," says bartender Kelly Minter.
Comfort food is on the stove, "Chili with fresh garlic and everything getting ready for the deer hunters." And they would remind you the deer hunting tradition includes a stop at your local tavern. "People always go, I had such a good time there last year let's go back. Oh, I won the shake of the day there," says MInter.
