Burglars Checking Obits Before Striking?

Dana Brueck

POSTED Monday, November 16, 2009 -- 5:30 p.m. By NBC15's Dana Brueck "I wasn't even scared. I was just flabbergasted," Nancy Kilen says. Same neighborhood, same time year after year! Police try to put a stop to a pattern of burglaries in Stoughton. Authorities want to know who's behind a number of burglaries in Stoughton! They say the circumstances suggest whoever's responsible is doing some research...And taking advantage of those mourning the loss of a loved one. "I got back a lot of the things that were family things... that were my mother's ... my great grandmother's ... things that really meant a lot... " Things stolen from the Stoughton home Nancy Kilen shares with her husband... "All of a sudden he said we've been robbed .. or something to that effect... " Kilen rushed to their bedroom to find her jewelry box missing. Their back door pried open! "I'm glad we weren't home," she says. But she believes whoever broke through the back door was watching the home. "Someone had to see us go... and that makes me nervous." Detective Allen Adams also has taken notice. "It's somebody familiar with the neighborhood," he says. Adams says more than a dozen burglaries have happened in the Norse Park area since 2006... all of them September through November... all of them the same method of entry... "They're prying the doors, primarily back entrances." But Adams also says a handful of break-ins have taken place while the homeowners were away at a funeral. "We went back and traced obituaries and you could see this person was gonna be attending or possibly attending a funeral quite a ways out of town so that they'd be gone for an extended period of time." Kilen says the biggest hassle in the ordeal... "Washing the mud off of the things that were retrieved..." Someone found her jewelry in a creek outside of Stoughton, but the most valuable items were missing... along with some stamps taken from their study. "Hopefully they're writing letters to their mothers!" Kilen also hopes some improvements, new motion lights, keep the thieves from striking again. Police urge people to be watchful and to take precautions - by securing doors, especially sliding doors and perhaps adding motion lighting. If you have any information, call Stoughton Police or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 266-6014.
