Wisconsin Releases Grenade Video to Settle AP Lawsuit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A video shows a Wisconsin prison guard tossing a powerful but nonlethal grenade inside an inmate's cell and then running away as the ensuing blast shakes the cell door. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections released the video to The Associated Press, which had filed a lawsuit seeking a copy under the state's open records law. The department also agreed to pay $5,000 in attorneys fees to the AP's lawyer, Bob Dreps of Madison. It did not admit wrongdoing. AP requested the video after the state paid $49,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the inmate, Raynard Jackson, who alleged the stinger grenade's detonation in his cell was excessive force. Jackson's case marks the only time a stinger grenade has been used inside a Wisconsin inmate's cell. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
