Kicking into the History Books

Chris Papst

POSTED: Friday, November 20, 2009 --- 4:36 pm. Words of encouragement are painted on the vehicles in the school parking lot. Signs of pride line the route away from the place where Tradition Never Graduates. And on this, the biggest game of the year, the Waunakee Football team is trading their stadium... for another one. For Kevin and Kristi McCarthy this game is more than just the final one of the year. These proud parents may not be the only ones that have siblings playing together for the state championship, but they are the only ones with a son and daughter on the field. Said Kevin, "Bryan was a little hesitant at first but he has grown to become appreciative of what she had done for the team. So, it's been a real good relationship on and off the field." Their son Bryan is the team's starting fullback. And his older sister Kassy is the kicker. "Honorable mention all-state kicker last year and she payed her dues and here we are," added Kevin. "She worked hard to get here." Heading into the game, Kassy was flawless on extra points, a perfect 60 for 60. And she was two for three on field goals. The WIAA is not sure if a girl has ever won a state title in football. But what they are sure about is that none has played as prominent a role for their team than Kassy. "She has really developed a leadership role on the team," stated Kristi. "When it comes to kicking she is as good as any of them," said her father. "Her team mates wanted her on the team. So I don't think she let them down. For the most part she has exceeded their expectations." "They really have respected and looked up to Kassy as getting the job done. And she has proven to do that," concluded Kristi. The game ended 34 to 21 and Kassy remained perfect for the season on extra points. She was four for four in the game. She did however miss a field goal to finish the season two for four. But she is a state champion football player.
