Woman Finds $10,000; Gives it to Police

Posted Thursday, November 19, 2009 --- 11:59 a.m. Incident Report from Madison Police Department: On Sunday morning, November 15th, a 22-year old woman contacted the Madison Police Department after waking up and discovering there was a duffel bag in her hotel room, a duffel bag she did not own, and it was filled with more than $10,000 in cash - along with some other items. The woman is from Los Angeles, but is currently attending school in Chicago. She was in Madison to attend a wedding, and she had shared a cab ride with her cousin from the reception back to her hotel. He helped her with her bags, and when she awoke she assumed the duffel belonged to him. She called his room, and he said no – the bag was not his. Placed in one of those ethical dilemmas, the woman called her mother for advice. Mom said call the police. Her daughter did just that explaining to an officer: the wedding, the cab ride, and how this duffel, which was in the back of the cab along with her bags, ended up in her room. The discovery launched a probe, which at first blush had investigators pondering whether this was drug money, or perhaps loot from a bank robbery. It turned out to be much more benign. A Madison businessman had been in the cab earlier, and forgot to grab his duffel when he got out. The cash was from his business, and he was taking it home for safekeeping. The case detective plans to nominate the young woman for departmental citizens award.
