I spent the day at one of the Dells' waterparks.  It's fascinating just to watch the people.  One thing struck me- more and more people are sporting tattoos.  Shoulders and ankles seem to be the popular spots.  Most of the drawings were so intricate that I couldn't make out what they were (ok, I didn't want to stare too much).  But then, isn't that what tattoo wearers want?  People to notice their artwork?

One woman had the entire cast of characters from the Wizard of Oz tattooed on her back.  Dorothy's head seemed almost life size.  She had the gang from Peanuts tattooed around her thigh.  Others had crosses on their upper backs.

So here are my questions for tattoo wearers...  What is the significance of your tattoo?  Do you ever have to cover it up for business or formal occasions?  Do you ever regret getting it?   What has been the response from your friends and family?

Thanks for sharing.  I look forward to your responses.

Amy

HI AMY MY NAME IS DOC. IM ABOUT 30% COVERED BY TATTOOS EVEN SOME ON MY FACE. NO I DONT REGRET GETTING TATTOOS ,I ONLY REGRET THE CLOSED MINDED POLLICIES OF CORPERATE AMERICA. THESE POLLICIES BAR EMPLOYMENT AND SOMETIMES EVEN THE PATRONAGE OF BUSSINESES ON ACCOUNT OF BODY MODIFICATION. TODAY I AM AN OUT OF WORK TATTOO ARTIST IN AN AGRESSIVE JOB MARKET AND OFTEN GET PUSHED ASIDE FOR UNMARKED ,LESS QUALLIFIED SEEKERS OF EMPLOYMENT. I WOULD NOT CHANGE ANYTHING EXCEPT THE BLINDNESS OF A PEOPLE SET ON ENFORCING THEIR BELIEFES ON THE UNWILLING

Hi Amy.I love the art work of Tattoo's,I know you watch show's like Miami Ink and LA Ink,and every body has some kind of deep meaning to them, but for me,I just like them.I have 11 right now and I might get 1 more. I also have them in area's of my body so I can cover them up when needed.Meaning like church or school stuff for the kids,I wish other's who wore tattoo's would do the same.I have seen some tattoo's that should have been covered up becuase the tattoo was almost x rated. But allot of people don't care and thats just sad. Well take care Amy and thank's for allowing me too add my 2 cents.

I have 2 tattoos. One is a Celtic spiral, called the Triple Spiral, or Spiral of Life. I researched Irish symbols and that was my favorite. I chose it because I am Irish, and wanted something to reflect that. The other is a vine with 7 leaves representing family members and it has my 2 kids' initials. My tattoos only show if I wear a very short sleeved shirt. I was pushing 50 when I got the first one, and had thought about it for a long time. No regrets. Am toying with a memorial to my Dad for # 3.

I don't have one and don't want one. I'm way too wimpy and would never be able to choose a permanent piece of artwork for my body. Also, in my line of work, it's not appropriate. (I'm a teacher...want to create a positive image for the children) I think that some tattoos can be attractive, especially if they have personal meaning, such as Tonya's. For the purpose of using your body as a canvas, if it's for you...that's great. I always want to ask people about their tattoos, but don't want to be too nosy. I think it's all a matter of personal preference. I'm not offended...but just chose not to tattoo myself.

I have two tattoos. Both of them are on the tops of my feet. On one foot there is a heart with a cross and a halo. It has the name of my son who passed away. On my other foot I have some flowers with hearts and that one has the name of my other two kids. I like tattoos as long as they have a meaning. I still want another tattoo over my heart with a picture of my son.

I have four of them. The first is a tribute to my last name which translates to eagle. The second are Chinese characters. The third was done in response to the election of 2004. It is a donkey on my rear-end. Not too hard to figure out what that one means. The university I attended changed the look of their mascot last year and you can no longer purchase items with the original mascot. It is tattooed on the ankle I broke in several places while in school. I have had many surgeries which have left me with some nasty scars. They look awful compared to the tattoos. I would like to get another that is an homage to my mother who died unexpectedly 3 years ago. Ironically my mother didn't object to the tattoos, my father hates them. Tattoos are no longer the domain of carnival workers and sailors. I am very solidly middle-class, have a master's degree and didn't have my first tattoo done until I was into my 40s. They are all in places I can cover up. I have no regrets.

Never have never will. Why waste money on something that looks ugly and is also painful? I don't get the appeal. There are much better and more attractive ways of expressing ones individuality.

When I was younger I thought if I ever get a tattoo what would it look like when I'm older (60, 70, or 80). Would I still be proud of it? What would my kids think about it? I finally decided to get one after my mom got one. My husband took me to get one for an anniversary present. He also has a couple including 2 he got at the same time I got my first. I got a fairy with beautiful butterfly wings sitting on a tiger lily on my lower back. I love it! My kids even love it! They say the fairy looks like me. Now I'm looking into getting another.

I have friends with serious tattoos (such as facial tattoos or sleeves) but they got the tattoos for themselves, not because they want people to stare, ask them questions or touch them. Sure, they're used to it happening, but that's not why they got tattoos. I know it's hard to understand for some, but please: don't make assumptions about people with tattoos or piercings. Many of us are respectable, intelligent private people with real jobs and responsibilities, who happen to like how these types of adornments look on ourselves. Some people like wearing the color green, other people like their tattoos.

I have 6 tattoos - they are an expression of my believes and my personality. One is a firefighter walking thru a wall of flames, for when I was a firefighter for 19 years. Another is a bald eagle in front of the flag for my patriotism - and another is a tazmanian devil for my attitude. They are all significant to me and I do not regret any of them.

Hello Amy, I have a tattoo of a Irish Claddah over my heart. It signifies the pride of my Irish heritage. I got the tattoo back when tattoos were not "cool". I do not regret it for a minute and when I am 90 and they ask me why I did it, I will tell them. It is covered up as it is on the left side of my chest. My family and friends think the idea was neat and some have thought of doing the same. Thanks, Tracy

This is a little different twist on your question. I guess I am answering in part, thinking of those who have obvious tattoos all over. I don't. I am not judging anyone else, to each his or her own, but personally, I would not choose to alter my body in any way. As the survivor of a very near death experience, I already have a huge scar from where they opened me up (my belly button is sideways) and another deep scar from the experience. I am grateful to have survived such long odds, but I would also give anything to not see the scars every day. I have trouble understandng why someone would choose to do that to their bodies.

I have two tatoo's. They are of a cat and a heart with my 3 sons names around the heart. The cat was for fun, the heart with my sons names are sentimental.

Amy, I have 5 tattoos so far. Only two of them have significance, the other three were just for fun. I do have one that I got on impulse that I kinda wish I would have thought about more, but still enjoy it. I don't need to cover mine up. They are good conversation starters at work!
