My daughter graduates from high school this week. It's been a month of bittersweet endings-the final band concert, the music awards, the school musical, the drama awards, the senior trip, auditions for graduation speaker, the prom, and now the big ceremony. Over the past few weeks, I've become her secretary-scheduling hair appointments, buying accessories to match a prom dress, helping address graduation announcements and party invitations. This coming week we'll host a party to honor her achievements and celebrate with friends and family. What a ride it's been...and I'm just the mother! I've had to tuck my own emotions away through all of the craziness. I can't begin to imagine the void when she leaves for college in the fall. Instead, we focus on the excitement of the present and memories of the past. I remember her boarding the bus for kindergarten and never looking back. Her zest for learning and outgoing nature have led her through many interesting doors. She has succeeded and failed but always manages to bounce back with confidence to try again. When she was born, my husband and I agreed that we didn't care if she was at the top of her class as long as she gave her best effort. We were also determined to raise a child who could get along well with all kinds of people. After watching her this past month, I feel we have succeeded. She spreads merriment wherever she goes and yet is always ready to lend a caring ear to a struggling friend. As parents we can't take credit for her accomplishments- we just share in the joy. We'll burst with pride as she receives her diploma and takes the next step into adulthood. These are days we'll remember. Congratulations, Sally! |

Amy, like you Iam also the mom of a high school grad. As I read your blog tears fill my eyes with the same emotions I felt as my son graduated. Im greatful that he has turned into a nice loving and careing young man and I only look forward to watching him grow into a hard working honest adult. Its very hard to let go of what you have focused so much of the past 18 years, raising a resposible child and giving them the tools they will need to carry them into adulthood. I hope and pray that someday very soon he will look back at all of this and say wow was I lucky to be a part of this wonderful family and community. Best of luck to all of you moms enjoy your summer with your upcoming college bound kids. I love you Levi!!! Posted by: Cindy Location: Blue Mounds Hi Amy: Congratulations to Amy (and you!)!!! As I read your blog it got me to thinking about my eldest daughter who will be a high school freshman next year. I hope to be able to savor all of these special moments to come. I got teary thinking of her on her first day of school as you recounted Sally's growing up. Thank you for sharing this personal side of you, and helping other moms that are going through the same things or by reminding them to enjoy all those special moments. Posted by: Julie Location: Watertown You have obviously suceeded in raising a daughter who makes you and herself proud. We always looked at it as having a child for a brief time and our goal was to help that child be the best person possible. Where others regretted kids leaving or doing certian things, we knew it was one step farther on the road to adulthood. We would not have wanted it any other way. Yes, we miss them and they know we care, but we did not do a guilt trip on them at the same time. It sounds like you have done a fine job. Now our children are adult children, married and with families and they are doing what they should and making us proud all over again. The times in the past were important and the times ahead are even more exilarating. Just look around when you are at the graduation ceremony and realize that not every one has the success that your daughter has and will have. You have guided her well, she will do you proud in the future as well. Posted by: so sweet! You're obviously a proud Mom! Congratulations to the Graduate! |
