Sometimes too much information is a bad thing. We were scheduled to fly to Denver last Friday for my nephew's wedding. On Wednesday night, I talked with David George about the potential for flight delays due to anticipated severe weather. We consulted the weather maps and made a hasty decision to rent a car and drive instead. We couldn't risk a delay since we were escorting the grandmother of the groom. She needed to be there to attend the rehearsal dinner on Friday night. We picked up my mother in law in Platteville in the driving rain and eventually made it to Lincoln, Nebraska that night. During the cocktail hour at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln, we experienced a brush with greatness. My husband whispered to check out the guy sitting behind grandma. I didn't recognize him right off, but my husband swore it was Dick Butkus-former Chicago Bears linebacker. We asked the bartender and he adamantly disagreed. It was then that my husband noticed Mr. Butkus was standing right behind him. He was touring to promote his new campaign "I Play Clean". It encourages high school athletes to train well and not use performance enhancing drugs. The rest of the trip was uneventful. Once we arrived on Friday, the rest of the family asked Grandma how the trip was. She responded,"BORING!". I only wish she would have said so sooner- we could have played license plate bingo, counted the horses or even sang songs. : ) Any favorite memories of your road trips?

We had an awesome road trip a few years before my son was born. We started out by going to Springfield (Ill.) and then St. Louis for a night, Memphis for a night, and then staying in the French Quarter for a few nights (right off of Bourbon Street.) Then we drove along the coast and stopped at Kiln (Favre) and spent a week on the Gulf side of the Florida coast. We then drove back, stopping in Birmingham and Metropolis (home of Superman.) Even though we have been to Florida several times, that was a great vacation! Posted by: Mike Location: Madison One of my favorite road trips started out with two friends of mine just wanting to take a car out for a drive after we had spent almost a week installing an engine we had rebuilt ourselves. We gassed it up, got our tapes (Van Halen before Sammy Haggar, ZZ top, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, etc.) and packed some soda and sandwiches. What started out as an early morning drive turned into an afternoon trip, then an early evening trip, visiting small WI town diners, gas stations, parks, and stuff... we slept in the car that night in a campground, hit the road at sunrise somewhere around Wausau, went to LaCrosse, spooner, green bay, milwaukee, janesville, prairie du chien, and finally back to madison. The engine worked great! and we got to see some of the most beautiful WI sights in a picture perfect autumn that I will remember forever. sometime I suggest trying it, hit the road with no particular destination in mind, and see where you end up! Posted by: Texas road trip! I roadtripped with 3 girlfriends to Texas. On the way down, I noticed the headlight of the car was burned out. The car wasn't mine, it was my friend's car. My friend brushed it off and said to keep going. We drove through the night. We were pulled over by a cop in Jefferson, Texas. I was the driver at this point. The cop had a HEAVY Texas accent and said "In Texas, ya gotta keep all yer lights burnin'!" Then the cop said, "And Ma'am, watch yer speed! Have a good night!" My friends and I BUSTED out laughing and couldn't stop! In Texas, ya gotta keep all yer lights burnin'! This is an inside joke to this day! Posted by: Cindy Location: BLue Mounds HI Amy: Two summers ago, our family made the trek to South Dakota via car and had some fun "discoveries" along the way. We went to Blue Earth, MN to stay over the first night and as we were driving into town I thought " Why have I heard of this place? Why?" Well, as we got closer my question was answered as we saw the Jolly Green Giant looming over the town. It was the home of Green Giant and we found a nice park, a small hut with info on Green Giant and some cut outs of the farmers and Little Sprout for the kids to have their picture taken with. A little campy fun was found in the most unexpected place. One of the benefits of driving on vacation~ |
