I just spent the most marvelous, cold (at least it was on Sat) , eventful, exhausting but fun weekend in the Dells.. and it had nothing to do with a waterpark.

For as much as we identify the Dells with all the action on the strip.. it doesn't take too long of a drive on a country road out of town to find any number of great summer camps.  Camp Wawbeek, Camp Gray and Upham Woods are just to name a few.  And there are so many more throughout our beautiful state and country.

It is the quintessential summer experience for kids, isn't it?  Summer camp.

And, because it was a topic of conversation among the parents, where did you go, or did you even have the chance to go to camp as a kid?  How has that impacted the experience your kids may or may not have?  Or, having been through this recently with your own kids, where would you recommend others check into?

Upham Woods is where we were for a great weekend with the Girl Scouts.

And while I had never been there, it seems to be a camp many who grew up in the Madison area are familiar with.  Mainly used as a 4H camp, it also is host to Girl Scout Troops, school groups and many more.  It's beautiful.  It's a 3 minute drive outside of town (and from the nearest Starbucks which most of the chaperones seemed grateful for) but feels miles from civilization.

The staff did a great job - and the girls were fired up.  It was perfect all around from the initial flag raising and pledge of allegiance which seems rare to hear anymore, to the hike at dusk, the adventerous rowing trek across the river to Blackhawk Island, the hike, the dining hall experience, the campfire, songs and skits, to a sleepless night with about 10 7-8 year old girls and their moms.  (To bed at ten and up by 5:30, total fun for the girls and more sleep than I usually get, but it was hysterical to say the least, how some didn't quite fully appreciate all the giggling before dawn.)  The camp though, the length of stay, the facilities and the company were all wonderful.  And, the camraderie we all felt upon leaving yesterday was something to remember.  I felt so very fortunate to be along.  It had been a long time since I myself have been to camp, and my daughter's first camp experience.

Thanks Girl Scouts, Lisa T and the Upham Woods staff.

Can't wait to go to camp again..  girls we all had a blast, hope you did too!  Mom's, great job on the obstacle course.  And thanks for the coffee runs.  (Does that really count then, as camp?)

I agree about camping, there is no need to have all the bells and whistles, just spend some quality , quiet time no batteries or plugs needed. We have The Great American Moose Hunt going on... all the campgrounds in Wisconsin can join in and they have campers doing a sort of scavengar hunt in local shop around Wisconsin to in the end maybe win a prize of two. It should be alot of fun for everyone and maybe help the campgrounds entice new campers and help local shops gain new customers too.

Carleen - I started camping while in boy scout. We did a lot of family camping when our children were young. They're now 39 & 40 years old and have families and have carried on the camping tradition. I guess it just gets in your blood. We have so many fond memories of family camping trips. One of the places I camped while in scouts was Jamison Park just outside of Poynette. The park is still there but I don't if they allow overnite camping. Our favorite place now is Silver Springs Campground near Rio. We've had a campsite there for the last 12 years. With the economy of today, camping is a great activity for many families who may not be able to afford to take a regular vacation. I would recommend Silver Springs to anyone who's interested. You can check them out on the web at silversprings camp.com Great topic - lots of memories!!!

Camp is the greates thing for kids. Mine loved camp and worked at scout camp when they got old enough and worked summers thru college. Their Scout famiy from camp is very important to them even tho they are well beyond that age. They loved going to camp as a camper, too. It taught them imdependence, self confidence, lots of skills, compassion, and love of the outdoors. My camping with them at times has to be one of the highlights of raising the kids. Hard to explain in so many words as you may relate to after your experience. Girl Scouts in Blackhawk have a great leadership and give the girls the basis for becoming responsible and well rounded adults. Keep up the camping and Scouts, you will never regret it. Oh, yes skip the coffee runs, not a good example for the girls. Scout coffee is not bad for those that drink the stuff. What is good for the girls is good for the Moms! Thanks for this topic, it is one close to my heart.
