Hello -
Here is the latest...DMX is now on lockdown.
Earl Simmons, the rapper better known as DMX, was moved from Tent City to a solitary cell, where he will spend 23 hours a day, following a verbal altercation with Maricopa County Sheriff's detention officers on Sunday. The rapper will likely remain for the next month, said Lt. Brian Lee, a sheriff's spokesman. DMX was serving his 90-day sentence with more than 2,000 other inmates in Tent City until Sunday, when he refused to report for his designated job in the jail. It wasn't the first time Simmons refused to work, Lee said. Later in the day, Simmons did not appear at the designated time to receive medication from jail staff, and became agitated when he showed up an hour later demanding medicine, Lee said. A supervisor tried to intervene, and Simmons launched into a profanity-laced tirade, Lee said, resulting in the lockdown order. Simmons was sentenced in late January to 18 months supervised probation and 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to cruelty to animals, theft and two drug counts. -The Arizona Republic Here was my original Blog...
Sheriff Joe Arpaio runs a prison in Maricopa County where inmates wear pink underwear, work in chain gangs and live in tents. During the summer of 2003, when outside temperatures exceeded 110 °F, Arpaio said to complaining inmates, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths." They get fans and water in the tents. That's it.
Tent City has been criticized by groups contending these are violations of human and constitutional rights.
Here is why I am blogging about Sheriff Arpaio. Rapper DMX (and repeat offender) is going to Arpaio's Tent City. According to Arpaio, DMX is serving time for charges of animal cruelty, drugs and fraud.
DMX now has to wear pink underwear and socks with the rest of the inmates. The wardrobe caught DMX by surprise. He said, "This is ridiculous, this is disrespectful." DMX added, "This is not where I want to be. It used to be, I'll go there (prison), I'll be the life of the party, and ... it's nothing."
When Arpaio heard this, he added that jail was not supposed to be fun.
Here is my take on the issue. I am not saying prisoners should be beaten and I am not saying that inmates cannot be rehabilitated. But DMX is *back* behind bars because he has no respect for animals or society. Yet he feels that this is "disrespectful" to him? Too many people in our society think they "deserve" respect. No, DMX. You have to earn it like the rest of us. So I say, go Arpaio, go! Arpaio is right, jail is not suppose to be fun and it is not suppose to be somewhere you want to go back to (on our dime)! So stop breaking the law, DMX!
What do you think about Arpaio and his policies? Or does DMX deserve white underwear in prison?

What does wearing pink underwear have to do with rehabilitation? It's more like humiliation. When has that ever stopped anyone from breaking the law? I don't get it.
Posted by: dave Location: AZ Way to go Joe!!! Posted by: Artie Location: Jefferson No new blogs? :( Posted by: Brenda Location: Oregon Christine...I agree with you, but take away the soap on a rope and call Dr. Phil (or Judge Judy!!!) Wonder what he would say (sure it would be embarrasing)... (laughing out loud as I type this!!) Some people just dont give a darn.. ya know? Posted by: Hayden Location: Iowa City Matt, you're spot on. The pink is psychological tool to calm. The University of Iowa football team, when they constructed Kinnick Stadium, made the visitor's locker room pink in color. Don't know if it worked but many a time visiting teams would comment on it and thus one must assume that it did have an effect. The Hawks are pretty successful at home in football. Posted by: Matt Location: Stoughton I don't know if Sheriff Arpaio was smart enough to figure this out but the color pink actually has a psycological effect on prisoners, and men in general. It turns aggressiveness into a more calm or laid back behavior. Realizing this, some penitentiaries have installed pink, padded cells. They place violent inmates into them until they become more subdued. Ladies, maybe this explains some of the charm effect you have over us guys. No wonder pink is the color of choice for Valentine's Day. I can see a side benefit to dressing prisoners in pink as well. Inmates may think twice about trying to escape if they look like they just came from a Barbie Doll convention. You wouldn't want to stick out like a sore thumb, now would you? DMX needs to suck it up. As long as the State is offering him free room and board for 90 days if they hand him a pink brush, he better be scrubbing toilets with it. Posted by: DD Joe is not a great American. He is arrogant, out of touch, and if you do some research, not doing a decent job of cleaning up his own county. Posted by: Elrod Location: Tuscaloosa I hope good ol' DMX is having fun as a trustee of the Arizona penal system. What a bum and what a hero Sheriff Joe is. Joe is a a Great American. Posted by: Paul Location: Sun Prairie It's a shame that there are so many people out there that have to classify a person's thoughts or beliefs into Democrat or Republican...Liberal or Conservative. People who do this are simply trying to dissuade others from having or sharing their opinion. Most people don't fit in such a neat box. They have beliefs and values that they follow. They might be in favor of incarceration as "hard time" but may not be in favor of the death penalty. Christine, it's obvious to a lot of us that your views depend on the issue and I think that makes you a well balanced (lol) person. As far as the issue goes...I found several studies concluding that former convicts return to prison at the same rate and it doesn't matter how much counseling they had. Studies also show that people who might be on the fringe of committing a crime are less likely to commit it because they're scared of what might happen to them in prison!!!! I think prison should be a little more punishment then the time out chair!!!!! Posted by: Elliott Location: Lyndon "Middle of nowhere" Station Originaly from Tucson, I used to think Sheriff Arpaio was acting a little harsh. Now hearing this I sat LMAO. All I have to say now is Go Joe Go. Especialy when DMX demands all this respect at the cost of my friends & family's tax dollars. Posted by: Bryan Location: Reedsburg Thanks to Sheriff Joe Arpaio and too bad for that low life rapper . He deserves what is coming to him and be treated accordingly to the crime he committed . Maybe he will through his time of being incarcerated ; he might get a reality check and get out and get a life . Posted by: Joe Location: Brooklyn Christine, new topic? Sheriff Joe has run his course. Posted by: Ann Location: WI When will people realize that respect can not be demanded but needs to be earned? I feel that if someone is in jail / prison they do not deserve respect. They did not respect the ones that they did their crimes against. DMX, along with most other celebrities need to grow the #@*! up. Posted by: Buck Location: Verona Christine, I noticed 15 was off the air this morning. Was that due to the digital switch? Posted by: BlackjackA!0 Location: Madison Maybe they should put him in with a Chimpanzee. Now that story is crazy. I think my days of visiting the zoo are over. Posted by: DD I think you should read report on the effectiveness of boot camps. This is from a 10 year study done by the justice department. Here is one quote, "With few exceptions, these positive changes did not lead to reduced recidivism. The boot camps that did produce lower recidivism rates offered more treatment services, had longer sessions, and included more intensive postrelease supervision. However, not all programs with these features had successful results." Enough said. http://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/197018.pdf Posted by: DD "DMX is beyond education and a "hug" at this point." Preceisely my point. When you equate counseling with a "hug" you are showing exactly what the problem is, ignorance. Do some research and find out how many repeate offenders are in our society and in jail. Obviously if they went to "lockdown" the first time, it didn't work. Right? My apologies for equating you with conservatives, perhaps just short-sited and uneducated on criminal rehabilitation (can't imagine how I would have equated that with conservativism). Posted by: Christine I am not a "conservative" by any stretch of the imagination. I am like many other taxpayers out there...tired of footing the bill for crime over and over and over again. DMX is beyond education and a "hug" at this point. It was his choice and his actions that landed him behind bars (and in lockdown) again. Posted by: DD I think this falls in line with the other conservative views you share on your blogs. Rehabilitation is not putting grown men in a tent city, it needs and element of education and conseling. Posted by: MJ Location: Madison As someone who lived in Phoenix for several years, I think Sheriff Joe should be locked up himself. Listening to the news everyday out there about one of his new crazy ideas got so tiresome. Then we move back to WI and he is still on the news. The guy is a loose cannon and does not have any decency about him. I personally think he does the tent city crap because it gets him the attention he so very much needs so he does not feel like such a little man. There are so many more problems, especially in the Phoenix area that should be dealt with. How about PREVENTION instead of PUNISHMENT, Sheriff Joe??? Posted by: Larry Location: Madison Well said, Rev! In a larger context, bloated language and political correctness are the very things that are preventing us (society) from solving our problems. How, you ask? You can't solve a problem if you don't admit it exists. Posted by: Carole Allen Location: United States These people are big wusses. If they lived in a Middle Eastern Country their punishments might involve loss of a body part of their life. This wonderful Sheriff also has the inmate work at Humane Societies and he has pretty much taken over the Maricopa County one, thus saving the taxpayers immense amounts of money. Too bad our country doesn't have more of these law enforcement officials instead of pampering our criminals. Posted by: Rev Location: Madison In response to Sandi's suggestion that I made a remark that disparages the blind: really?? This is a fine example of over sensitivity run amok. All the problems of society can't be boiled down to people using "offensive" terms like "blacklisted" or "white-collar." Since when was white-collar crime not bad? If saying "blacklisted" is disrespectful, then what is next? Must I not wear my black leather jacket, but instead my outer garment of tanned hide the color of which does not reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum (thanks Wikipedia)?? Absurd. Furthermore, the word crippled has been applied to the economy recently, and less recently, it's in the Bible, Jesus used it. The term blind is used in a number of contexts, are persons who are blind offended by those uses? Window blinds, blind test, double blind, hunting blind. Ouch. The most valuable lesson I learned from George Carlin: People who want to control your language actually want to control your thoughts. Posted by: Sandi Location: Wisconsin I have a question. what does it mean when "Rev" said "Madoff was robbing blind"? I work with many blind people in both Wisconsin, and other countries, and I have never understood how someone can be "robbed blind". to me, that sounds very disrespectful to the blind people of the world who work hard to educate themselves so they can participate in society, despite a disability that generally is not given enough support. It is about respect, is it not? People don't say "robbed crippled", or "robbed deaf", or "robbed some other race"... but to be robbed blind by somebody. why is that? "White collar crime" is seen as non violent, so not as bad, but to be "black listed" is such a bad thing! Sarah was right. perhaps people should offer respect first, and only insist it be "earned" after they have done something to prove themselves undeserving of that respect. I am still curious Christine, and I feature you to be highly in tune with slang... what is it to be "robbed blind"? Posted by: Erin Location: Madison The idea that respect has to be earned is not archaic. But its meaning has been shifted. I agree that we should provide respect to everyone, but only until they have demonstrated that they do not deserve it, at which point they do need to earn it back. But, if those expecting to receive respect(ie DMX) believed it needed to be earned, rather than a right, then your fixes to society would begin to happen. As a society we do offer respect to many who have not earned it. Yet many just expect it to be there forever regardless of their actions. See DMX's party attitude towards prison. Posted by: Jeff Location: Wi Dells Joe the Sheriff should be complimented on his rehabilitation practices. The problem with our "system" is that the offenders are not given a punishment that will deter them from being repeat offenders. Its proven in every county in the US. Maybe society needs to start looking at Joe the Sheriffs jail and its effects on repeat offenders. Criminals know that every crime they are convicted of, they are garuanteed three meals and a wake up. They also know that the odds of spending there entire sentence in the lock up is always reduced because it cost the law abiding taxpayers to much money to hold them in an area with all their buddys. I say more jails need to be a places where the convicted felon feels a bit ridiculed and disrespected. Maybe then the return trip will not be such a homecoming. Posted by: Randi Why is DMX so upset? Do they have tvs in there? What is his deal? He is just upset about pink boxers and having to camp out like Boy Scouts??? Doesn't sound too bad. Posted by: Rev Location: Madison Personally, I don't have a problem with the way Arpaio runs his facility, so long as the prisoners aren't victims of torture or cruelty (leave that to the experts in the NSA and CIA). As to DMX, he should suck it up and do his time. My problem is with the inequity in the criminal justice system and the punishments that are meted out. A great example of this is Bernie Madoff. He spends his pre-trial days in a luxury apartment in NYC, and is accused of robbing blind many many people of billions of dollars. So how many poor people rot in jail waiting to be tried for shoplifting, or pot, or some other minor offense? It's high time the rich and famous get the same treatment as those of lesser means, and that's exactly what Arpaio is doing for DMX. So when will Madoff be fitted for his pink drawers? Posted by: Sara Location: Madison My take on it is that neither men are in the right here. Sheriff Arpaio needs to get a lesson in humane treatment of prisoners and DMX needs to get lessons in humane treatment of animals. There's no disputing these facts. This is not what stands out to me though. What does stand out to me, however, is the archaic idea that respect has to be earned. Respect should be given to everyone no matter what. In fact, I daresay that if we treated all people with respect without the stipulation that it has to be "earned" we could prevent a lot of the problems we have in our society now. In fact, I challenge every person who reads this to make a point of treating everyone with respect, regardless of what they get back, just to see how much a difference it makes. It will stun most people, I think. Posted by: local Location: dane co Like the defense attorney Jim Carrey played in "Liar,Liar" when he screamed @ his client over the phone, "QUIT BREAKING THE LAW !@#$%^&!". I soooo agree with the Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Posted by: todd Location: verona Good topic to blog about Christine...i think you are right about this topic and the folks who oppose this should wear pink underwear out in public...how can people cry about this this is so correct all prisons should go to this and make them sweat but give them water they will not come back if they have a hard time sorry folks but sitting around watching cablei s how they got their in the first place... Posted by: Scott Location: Madison Are you kidding me? If pink underwear and socks are the worst of what DMX has to go through, in PRISON no less, then he's got it easy. Maybe he should've listened to the theme song from "Baretta" and taken the lyrics to heart ("Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Keep your eeeeyyyeeee on the sparrow...") While in the pokey, maybe DMX can remake one of his own songs..."Y'all gona me me lose my mind/In pink drawers and pink socks!!" If wearing undergarments that are less "manly" make people want to stop commiting crimes, then instill that "punishment" all over the country. This is NOT a violation of human rights in any way and besides....it's PRISON!! Posted by: Cindy Location: Blue Mounds I totally support Sheriff Joe and his methods! Jail is not meant to be a spa with unlimited access to TV, work out equipment and other perks. Beyond classes for rehabilitation or job workshops, those in jail deserve nothing. They are in there to learn from their mistakes and pay in time for their societal crimes. There should be more jails that are run like Sheriff Joe's. (Go Joe!) DMX is a low life and deserves everything he gets and more! Posted by: Tim Location: Madison DMX.... What a joke. This is the first of his tour in prison. We all forgot that the crack head.. I mean DMX also got busted for inpersonating a cop just to get a fix. Now he has to wear Pink man panties. BIG DEAL Live with it you did the crime now do your time. One note I seen a Doc/ on History channel about Tent city and the prisoners had no compliants. And if DMX thinks pink underwear is bad, then lets seem him mess up in there and put in a pink Jump Suit, b/c they do that for people that act up. Posted by: John Location: Deere I think it is lame!! They did something wrong and are paying there time for their crimes. No need to be little them. Especially the first timers. Posted by: Mike Location: Madison Go Sheriff Joe! JUST pink underwear? Hell, I think they should be dressed in pink, head to foot! it is such a nice, light, reflective color that would cut down on heat absorbing properties of dark colored fabrics in the AZ sun on those hot days! I think Dane County should 1. get rid of Huber, 2. have a tent city 6 months out of the year, and 3. make the prisoners do their own laundry, by hand, if they want clean prison utilities to wear! It is so funny, half these low lifes wouldn't have weight training gear or cable at home, but they go to jail or prison, and the tax payers supply it to them for free! here's a big hint- break the law, lose not only your freedom, but your respect, and your rights to be pampered by hard working people who didn't break the law! maybe a couple months of shoveling snow off city sidewalks in pink clothes during Madison winters for free would keep 'em honest, and out of jail! staying honest, and legal isn't hard, many of us do it every day, so no pity here. Posted by: OLD GUY Location: Sun Prairie Christine- I say good for Sheriff Joe!! like everyone else that has stated; we need more Sheriff's like him. I'm not suggesting that we make the inmates live in tents here in Wisconsin, but at least lets get the "Country Club" style out of the prisons and make it so that they do not want to return. Sheriff Arpaio's comment to DMX is what I would have told him. Posted by: Buck Location: Madison Sheriff Joe would instill a little discipline here in Dane County, something badly needed to reduce the criminal element. Time to take back our streets, people. We shouldn't have to live in fear in one of the best cities in America. Posted by: Don Location: Arlington I don't know who DMX is nor do I care. I 100% agree with what this Sheriff is doing to these low lifes! More Sheriffs should take his lead!! Posted by: Doesn't feel sorry The world needs more sheriff's like this one. Prison these days is more like a day spa. Criminals are there because they broke the law, they should not be given special treatment while they're there. Maybe if prisons weren't so much "fun" there wouldn't be so many criminals overflowing them. There's a State prison here that has prime cut meats delivered from the local meat market, they eat better than the students in our public school. That's not right! Prisoners get fresh meats and vegetables while children get processed and canned foods. To all the whiners crying about prisoners rights I say boo-fricken-hoo. It's time to get priorities in order and take care of the decent law-abiding citizens rather than giving special treatment to rapists, murderers, child and animal abusers, drug dealers...etc. The prisoners should feel lucky to have pink socks and underwear. at least they have them and they get cleaned, think about all the homeless people who don't have even that. Posted by: Larry Location: Madison While I think that inmates have to earn respect like the rest of us, I also think we should consider that life is not a level playing field. A lot of the inmates acted like thugs or worse because that is what they felt they had to do, in order to survive in the ghettos of America. Forcing inmates to wear pink underwear and putting them to work in 110 degree temperatures sure sounds like slavery is making a comeback. Disresepct them, take their freedom away, and put them to work. That's what I mean by that slavery comment. This country needs to invest in people not in building more prisons. Black fathers also have to take responsibility for the children they have. Otherwise, the cycle of poverty and ignorance will continue. Finally, communities have to become more involved with keeping their citizens on the straight and narrow path. It seems like prisons go to one extreme or the other (e.g., cable TVs, exercise rooms, etc.) or what Sheriff Arpaio is doing. Posted by: JML Location: Janesville My parents winter in that part of AZ & LOVE Sheriff Arpaio. He tends not to have repeat offenders in his county. Respect, as you mentioned, needs to be earned not given. I wish Sheriff Arpaio would relocate to WI. |
