There's been a lot of buzz about this past Friday's Oprah Show. One NBC 15 viewer was kind enough to give me an email ahead of time, telling me it was about puppy mills. Many of you who regularly read my blogs might know I have a soft spot for animals, especially of the canine variety!
During the show, Lisa Ling uses a hidden camera to investigate puppy mills, tagging along with a man who rescues dogs from such places.
Time got away from me on Friday so I missed the episode. That said, thank goodness for TIVO! I hope to watch it soon. I have, however, read quite a bit from the episode on oprah.com. It appears all of the info is right there!
If you saw it -- or read about it -- then you probably know the episode started with a billboard off of a Chicago expressway, asking Oprah to do a show on the topic. Apparently, it got her attention!
It seems the taping in general has captured the attention of many... people with companion animals...animal activists... breeders and others.
Here in Wisconsin, a report on Wisconsin Puppy Mills by WTMJ TV in Milwaukee, our NBC affiliate, had the same effect locally. It received a lot of attention, winning just this past weekend an award from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for significant community impact. The investigative report highlighted conditions at facilities right here in Wisconsin.
A non-profit known as the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project is pushing state legislation to regulate breeding facilities. You can read about it at: http://www.nowisconsinpuppymills.com/legislation.html
But what do you think... about the legislative effort? Is it needed? Or, about the Oprah show on puppy mills?
I'm looking for your thoughts so please feel free to share!

Hi Dana, I watched the Oprah Show and was appalled at the inhumane treatment of the dogs. These abusive owners are a perfect example of greed being given a priority over love and compassion. I am a firm believer in karma and these individuals will pay a very heavy price for their darkness. In their next reincarnated life they will reap what they sow! Hopefully in a future life they will learn to study the life of St. Francis of Assisi who is the Patron Saint of Animals, Birds and the Environment. He taught there should be no separation between spirituality and the way we treat animals, birds and the enviroment. Oprah's Show while disturbing served it's purpose in revealing this darkness to the public. Light or Higher Consciousness will now work more to counter this darkness. In the end love and compassion will over come the darkness. Thank you for allowing me to express my views. |
