| You're Helping Me Tie One On Each Night |
You may have read the Community Ties blog that explains what this combination contest/charitable donation is all about...if not, please take a moment to do so.
The ties that I have received sometimes come with just a name and sometimes they have a meaningful letter attached.
One man sent a tie that he was wearing when he met is wife in the 1950s.
Another walked into the station lobby and took it off and handed the tie to me personally.
Many women have sent ties that belonged to their husbands, and they want them to go to someone that can use them.
One came from a man that wore the tie at his high school graduation some fifty years earlier.
One dear lady even sent ties that belonged to her son who was killed in an auto accident last October.
This will be a continuous post with an update of names to those that not only contribute ties for Porchlight, Inc. but also have a tie chosen by me to wear on weeknight newscasts for which $15 (105 meals) is given to Second Harvest Foodbank by Kraft/Oscar Mayer.
Through summer the announcement is made at 10pm. This fall, the winner's name and hometown will be mentioned at 6pm. Sometimes due to holidays or vacation, I will wear one tie at 4, 5, and 6pm with announcement made and another at 10pm with a different winner. By doing this we maximize the number of ties worn; therefore, we push as much money as we can toward fighting hunger.
It is my hope that we can develop an on-line celebrity auction this November were community leaders, local entertainers and athletic heroes would autograph ties that could be given to highest bidder. This event might coexist with NBC15's Share Your Holidays campaign.
Below is the list of ties worn in order of appearance. Thanks again for giving, and if you recognize a name let them know in case they missed the broadcast.
