With summer right around the corner (apparently), here are some of my favorite, quirky things about America's past-time and the Boys of Summer:

-Players getting off the bench to congratulate someone who just laid down a sacrifice bunt or intentionally hit the ball to the right side to advance a runner to third.

-Outfielders laying out for fly balls.

-The phrase "dealing" when referring to a pitcher who has nasty stuff on a particular day

-Catchers sacrificing their bodies to block a pitch in the dirt

-When home team fans boo a visiting pitcher for throwing a pick-off attempt (this one is so stupid and pointless that it cracks me up)

-Giving a standing ovation to a pitcher who has thrown a great game and just been removed during an inning... Then having the pitcher tip his cap in acknowledgment of the fans

-Hitters who don't use batting gloves

-Referring to all players as "kid" (i.e. "what do you say now kid?")

-Fans singing along to the National Anthem

-Plays at the plate

I don't know if this is quirky, but when I was first getting interested in baseball (a few years ago), Milwaukee did not have a professional baseball team. I was drawn, instead, to the Cardinals, who may have been the best team in baseball at the time ('67 and '68.) I liked the speedy Lou Brock and,of course, Bob Gibson. To this day, I still like the Cardinals. I also support the hometown team, of course.
