Before I'm bashed by all the Packer backers out there, let me first say this. I love Brett Favre. You can ask Robb Vogel about my sometimes unhealthy obsession with him and how I immediately went into mourning the week he retired.
With that said, I'm sick and tired of all these rumors floating around and wish Favre would do exactly what he said he was going to do during retirement, "Nothing." When Favre made an appearance on "The David Letterman Show" a couple months ago, he mentioned that "something" will happen around the time NFL Training Camp begins. Of course, the national media blew this out of proportion because Brett Favre is to ESPN what Britney Spears is to TMZ, every little thing they say or do is magnified ten-thousand times more than it needs to be. Then last week, ESPN's Chris Mortensen hears from a Packers "source" that Favre has an "itch" to come back and has talked to team officials about a possible return. That set off a frenzy of rumors in which the likes of Brett's mom, brother, and Al Harris made comments to the media that certainly did not dismiss the idea of Favre returning. Meanwhile, all we have heard from Brett is a text message that he sent to a print writer in Biloxi, Mississippi that simply stated, "It's all rumor." Brett, do us all a favor; if you do have an itch, scratch it and be done with it. Don't get me wrong, I was shocked that Favre chose to retire this off-season rather than try to make another run to the Super Bowl with pretty much the exact same team that nearly reached that point last season and would love to see him back under center in Green Bay. But at this point of the game, Favre needs to stay true to his tearful good-bye. The keys in Green Bay have been handed to Aaron Rodgers who has patiently waited three years for his opportunity. He has taken every step in the right direction this off-season to become the new leader of the Pack, and to be completely sympathetic, I feel terrible for him. A-Rodg has to be sick and tired of hearing questions about replacing Favre and now this happens three-and-a-half weeks before Training Camp begins and will certainly be bombarded with even more questions regarding his predecessor in the up-coming weeks. Now I'm not saying that the Packers are better off with Rodgers at quarterback than Favre, but number four chose to hang it up and it needs to stay that way for the best interest of all parties involved. However, the worst part of this whole situation is how I have to hear about Favre possibly stepping onto the field for a team other than the Packers. Let me just say this, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Packers GM Ted Thompson would have to go into hiding in Green Bay if he were to allow Favre to sign with another team or trade him. Plus, the thought of Favre is anything other than a green and gold jersey makes me nauseas and I wouldn't be able to handle it. He's not going to Chicago or Minnesota. He wouldn't return to play for a terrible Atlanta team. So please, stop even bringing up the possibility. Even though I, like Harris, would welcome Favre back with open arms, the unattached sports fan in me thinks he needs to keep quiet about anything "return" related and make sure that lawn on his Mississippi property is evenly mowed.
