First of all, I have to ask: does anyone in Madison care about the Milwaukee Bucks?

I LOVE the NBA Draft, and coincidentally enough, it falls on June 25th this year, which also happens to be my birthday.  For me, this week is sort of like Christmas week to a child.  I am literally counting down the days until Thursday at 6:30 when the draft begins.  Not that I am a huge fan of the NBA or anything, but the off-season sucks me in every summer like Michael Corleone getting pulled back into the family business.  I study mock drafts, read rumors on a daily basis, and will literally watch every single second of the draft, digesting every little tidbit Jay Bilas breaks down.

Enough with my obsession.

The Bucks own the 10th overall pick in the 1st round and the 41st pick in the second round.  After last year’s miss on Joe Alexander with the eighth pick, Milwaukee needs to find a player who can contribute right away.  All signs are pointing towards the Bucks drafting a power forward or point guard since current players Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions could both be lost this off-season via free agency.

The ideal situation would be for Arizona junior PF Jordan Hill to fall to Milwaukee, but that scenario is unlikely to happen.  That would leave Pitt’s DeJuan Blair as the only other power forward prospect worth taking with the tenth pick.

But this year is a point guard heavy draft in which as many as ten point guards could be picked in the first round.  When it’s Milwaukee’s turn to make their selection players like Jonny Flynn of Syracuse, UCLA’s Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings (the high school player who left to play a year professionally in Italy this past season), North Carolina’s Ty Lawson, or Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague could all be on the board.

I am going to predict that the Bucks select Flynn in the first round.  He seems like a Scott Skiles-type guy who plays hard on both ends of the floor.  Flynn is a proven leader and could potentially be the long-term solution at point guard that Milwaukee needs.  Maybe they find another second round steal like they’ve done in recent years with Michael Redd, Sessions, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

Here is my favorite NBA Mock Draft on the web if you want to see who is predicted to go where: http://www.walterfootball.com/nbadraft2009mock.php

Why should the public care about the Bucks when there owners, GM and anyone else there does not? Whats the big deal about the draft anyways? The Bucks will end up trading the person away if he is a decent player or lose him to free agency due to the fact that they are a small market and cannot afford the high priced players for any more than 2 years tops. I was a season ticket holder but until they show me that they are serious about building a team that can actually win over 50% of their games, I will not be a season ticket holder again.
