Whether it's Myspace, Facebook, or more recently, Twitter, technology continues to evolve.  That evolution is having a direct effect on athletics at every level.

Back when rumors started to pop up that Madison Memorial's Vander Blue was considering de-committing from Wisconsin, it was only magnified when Blue reportedly posted a status update on his Facebook page saying he had some serious thinking to do.

At his weekly press conferece today, Bret Bielema commented on warning his players about what they write on their Twitter pages because it is in a public forum and can be seen by thousands of people.  Bielema admitted looking at other player's tweets from other colleges and also mentioned how tweets can have an effect, both negatively and positively, on recruiting.

From the first day of Packers Training Camp this summer, Mike McCarthy announced any player found tweeting during practice, a meeting, or game would be fined $1,701.  Just today, super-tweeter Nick Barnett de-activated his Twitter account after receiving some negative comments from fans following Green Bay's loss to the Bengals.  A Chargers player was fined for tweeting about the food at training camp being less than desirable.

Do you tweet?  If so, which athletes or coaches do you follow?

Here at NBC 15 Sports, Nick Austin and I have joined the Twitter frenzy.  (You can follow me at Kmiecik_NBC15 or Nick at Austin_NBC15.)  We have been live tweeting from games, updating scores or giving our observations from the sidelines, posting news updates and informing people what they can expect during our sportscasts.  So if you have a Twitter account, follow NBC 15 Sports.  Just don't criticize me at any point or I might de-activate my account like Barnett.  Ha.

I think Twitter is so useful for the fact of it's simplicity and how well connected it has become with mobile devices. I haven't started following any coaches or athletes, but now I have two stellar reporters to follow. You better tell Nick to pick it up, he's only got 13 followers to your 77.

I guess that I am "old school" in that I don't space, face, test, twitter or tweet. In fact, I am so old school that I do not even have an Ipod and rarely even use my cell phone (it might have text on it, who knows, I haven't used it). However, before you get the wrong idea here, I live on laptop. I teach an online course and I taking an online course (one of many I have taken). I guess it is just a matter of preference and only having time for so many things in a day. When I am not teaching, reading, writing, or studying, I am usually sleeping or doing something with the family, along with the occasional game of racquetball.
