On January 20th, Barack Obama will be the first African American elected
president of the United States. This is something people thought they would
never see in their lifetimes. It’s so historic and meaningful for our
country. And it makes me wonder is race still a factor anymore?

Racism has existed forever, along with sexism and other types
discrimination, but can we now say these are things of the past?

I know it’s impossible for every single person to change. But, Obama’s
election I feel has really altered our nation.

In fact, exit polls showed race played less of a role in the presidential
election than age.

And the outcome from his election has been so positive. After the
election, I read over and over again how for the first time in a long time,
people of different ethnicities, genders, religions, and sexual orientations are ready to make a change because of Obama. They are proud of our country and inspired
to not let their differences get in their way.

So, what do you think? Is race still a factor?

unfortunately if you get 2 people in a room, there will be discrimination on some level. intolerance, on which many if not all of the "-isms" are based will never disappear. Yes, so many people can say they will change because of this momentous event in our nation's history... but human emotions are based on life experiences. I believe it will be very very difficult for people to just say "I'll forget that 49 years ago white cops set German shepards loose on me because of my skin color because now we have an African American President". I bet the minute that person sees a German Shepard, they'll think it is going to bite them, because that is what 1 German Shepard in the entire world did to them. Think I'm kidding? I take my guide dog out everywhere I go, and people scream "OMG! He's got a dog in here!" or I hear "I was bit by a dog as a kid" so right away my dog is viscious! How do you think people who were beaten by a person of another color, or sexual orientation, are going to cope?

Sadly. I think that race is still a factor. However, this election shows me that most people can look past that and concentrate on the real issues at hand. My cocern is that due to the current U.S. (and World) situation, President Obama may not be able to "fix it" as far as people expect him to in his first 4 years. It took "W" and the Republicans 8 years to create this conundrum. I hope we can give this educated man the proper and respectful 8 years he will need to change the nation and get it going in the right direction.

Who really cares if hes black or has a tan? Would we make such a fuss if every president of america up till now had blue eyes and all of a sudden the new guy had green? Leave the past in the past! I am sure Mr. Obama's election means something to a few people looking at the historic racial issues but who really cares? What is important to focus on what is pressing matters. The more we focus on race the more it stays an issue! People fighting Racism are as bad as racist themselves. Every inteligent person needs to stop even using the word race because there is really only one Biological race and that is human race! We might have originated from different parts of the world but so what? what is important is what we as individuals do not as a collective.
