As with any wedding, there are so many decisions that go into planning your big day from the wording on your invitations to the color of the flowers in your bridesmaids' bouquets to the song for your first dance. On any given day, it makes my head spin. So you would think it would be easy to choose the honeymoon destination. It’s a vacation! Who doesn’t like to plan one of those? Well, think again.
It must be my love for travel, or possibly my desire to visit every country in the world before I die (my girlfriends and I once discussed each owning a large map of the world and putting push pins in every country we visit)... whatever it is, we cannot make a decision on our destination.
First it was Mexico, but David George kindly reminded me that the week we plan to vacation is the week after the height of hurricane season! Okay, no thank you.
That lead us to Costa Rica, as it is farther south. The country looks amazing and has great fishing opportunities (remember, I caught a 34 inch northern pike last year and need to beat my record!) but it is still a possible hurricane location.
We’ve also looked at Aruba, since it is at the southern-most part of the
Caribbean and a travel agent once told me that hurricanes typically pass over that island. We’re just not sure this is really what we want.
Here is our thinking: you only go on a honeymoon once! So it should be awesome, right?
My first choice is the country I’ve wanted to visit ever since a college history professor spent an entire hour talking about what he called, “The most beautiful place on earth.” I’ve always wanted to take in the history of
Athens and then visit an island or two. My professor mentioned Santorini, so that’s on the list.
But Charlie isn’t thrilled about Greece. And marriage is about compromise so we continued looking.
His first choice is Australia. At least that’s the place he’s always wanted to visit. I think it would be great, but it’s so far and not necessarily a great honeymoon destination. Or is it?
That led us to look into Fiji, which looks amazing. We’ve also received some glowing recommendations about the culture and activities available there.
My co-anchor John then heard about my dilemma and he threw
Tahiti into the mix. Well, he let me borrow a tape of a Tahiti special he did while working in
Seattle . It looked amazing and he tried drift snorkeling, which is so cool!
Then we decided to look into Maui or
Kauai to get the same feel at a possibly lower cost. We’ve been to
Oahu for a family wedding and really enjoyed it.
Every place we research, we end up loving. But then we look into another location and love that, too. I never have been good at making decisions on restaurants… and now I know travel is no different.
So, as you can see, we’ve now traveled around the globe and still don’t have a honeymoon destination! Help!
I’d love to hear where you went on your honeymoon… or where you would go, if you could do it all over again. Any advice would be helpful.
I need to move on to the next thing on the list!
