An UPDATED look at the top 5 snowiest seasons in Madison!
1. 2007-2008 -- 101.2" (as of 4-9-08) 2. 1978-1979 -- 76.1" 3. 1885-1886 -- 75.9" 4. 1993-1994 -- 73.7" 5. 1985-1986 -- 72.4"
And just because it's interesting... from 1967-1968 Madison only recorded 12.7" of snow... the LEAST amount on record!
What do YOU think of all this snow? Any words come to mind to describe this incredible, record breaking snow season? For me... it's TOUGH.
Bundle up, stay warm and we’ll see you Saturday and Sunday mornings! |

I hate it! I am so ready for this winter to end. Posted by: Chalye Location: portage Growing up in the southeast and moving to Wisconsin 4 yrs ago, I have found total appreciation for not only the snow(glorious) but everything that comes with it! Knowing that spring is on the way gives me an added appreciation for its unique beauty! Posted by: Anonymous To answer your question... snow cover is tracked in Madison. The snow depth right now (2-29-08) is 14" and yes, we have had continuous snow cover since the beginning of December. But, as we warm and cool, the snow depth will change, especially this weekend as we're looking to be well above the freezing mark with rain. Hope that helps! Posted by: Snow Bound Location: East SIDE Wondering if snow coverage is tracked in Madison? Seems like we've had at least an inch on the ground since Dec. Posted by: Frank Location: Potosi Thank you for your wonderful piece on the Potosi Brewery. It was more than I had expected. It was a pleasure working with you. By the way, the brewery facility will probably be opened only on a limited basis starteng in April (on Saturdays). The entire complex will be opened on a regular basis starting in June. As an aside, for the preview opening, 800 or more were in attendance. Posted by: Paul Location: Reedsburg Bring on the snow, lets hit the 100 inch mark!!! Posted by: McKenna and Nycole Location: Lake Mills, Wisconsin We are SICK of all the SNOW. Do to all the fluffy stuff we have to make up a day at the end of the school year because we used all three snowdays and we had a total of four snowdays. Our parents are sick of shoveling and driving to work on dangerous roads full of ice. However, being kids living in Wisconsin we LOVE the snow (well at least we do). Our favorite winter activity is sleding down our school's hill, which is huge and fun to go down but it is a pain to climb up to the top.We hope it will go away soon but then we will have a flood in our basement (KAWABUNGA! SURF'S UP DUDE!)that we will have to help cean. So please keep on sending the smow Mr. Charlie Shortino! P.S. in small amount please so we don't have any more snowdays. We however would love late starts or early dismissles. We love the show! Bye! Posted by: GH I'LL SMILE Location: Arlington I TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT ALL THIS SNOW!!!! Posted by: Tammy Location: AZ Move to az, it's wonderful. Today we have 60 degrees. I know people will say they can't take the heat, but give me 105 degrees and almost zip humidity over 95 degrees and dew points of 74 anyday. We live in Northern AZ, I wouldn't enjoy Phoenix congestion and pollution. Posted by: Bobby Location: Madison Hi Michelle, Is there a web site that shows daily snow totals by day for this winter. I'm new at my job of shoveling the neighbors driveway and I missed a couple days last week I think. Can you help? Thanks...Bobby Posted by: Skeptic Location: Madison, WI Jimmy the groundhog predicted an early spring. I think your forecasting job is safe Michelle. Posted by: Packer Fan Location: WI As the French would say, "Assez neiger déjà!" Bring on the warmth anytime now! Posted by: Delores Location: Janesville I wrote a poem about the snow. It is white and fluffie with lots of mite I think it should go away and not come back again. Sometimes it is pretty but not always nifty. I like to make snowballs when there are flakes that falls winter will be over some day until then lets go play My dog likes to run in the snow for fun One time I fell on a sidewalk and hurt my hip. Posted by: auntiedispatcher Location: Brodhead AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I don't like it AT all. Have had to drive to and/or from work in so much snow I'm just sick and tired of it!!!! Then throw the cold in on top of it!! PLEASE make it stop. Guess that 'bout sums it up for me Posted by: tyler kleiner Location: dickeyville wow i like this so much. no school man i would like this eveyr year. Posted by: Anonymous this is auson Posted by: Larry Location: Madison As I write this, we've already broken the all-time snowfall record in Madison (79.2 inches and counting). As some of my Jewish friends' mothers used to say, "Enough, already yet!" I don't like to skate, ski, or snowmobile, and I don't have ancestors from the Scandinavian or Nordic countries. I'd like to spend the whole year in shorts and a t-shirt while wearing my Crocs Scutes sandals. I like the people here as they're much friendlier than the people I knew growing up in Massachusetts, but the snow and especially the wind in the flat Midwest is not my idea of a good time! Looks like I'll have to continue moving further west. Posted by: Skeptic Location: Madison, WI Does this mean I get to stop worrying about global warming? Why are 5 of the 6 snowiest seasons in the last 30 years? Posted by: Carol Location: Wi. When i was a kid i loved winter, but as i got older i hate it. It gets worst year after year.I'll take summer any time over winter.Hopefully spring will come pretty fast. this can make a person go bonkers!!!! Posted by: Dan Location: Madison "keep the snow coming?" Snow is heaven?" WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Lets give all this snow to canada. we don't want it. Further, when we break the record, can we have congress pass a law that says we don't have anymore snow the rest of the year? That would be awesome. Posted by: Anonymous Thank you SO much. I'm kind of a weather freak and love the snow! The seasonal record is unreal in this age of global warming. Also interesting to note that 5 of the top 10 snowiest years have occurred since the winter of 78-79. Hard to believe! Posted by: snow bound Love the snow!!We X-country ski, snowboard, etc...as long as it's winter, might as well be snowy. Thanks for the reply, I searched online for snow data, but found little. Posted by: snow Bound Location: East SIDE What are the top 10 snowiest years on record for Madison? Posted by: Juli Location: Madison What is the most snowfall Madison has received in a season? Will we break the record this year? Posted by: JJ Location: Dane Keep the Snow Coming!! Posted by: Sheyenne Location: Waunakee I think this Snow is HEAVEN! i love to snowmobile and i cant wait till i can get all dressed up and go riding! Posted by: Cheryl Location: Janesville Wisconsin Wow!! What a month of snow! I spend about 4-5 hours driving on the rural roads in our area every day and it has been generally pretty trechorous out there. Hoping for a quieter January. It is beautiful to look at though. I wonder if we beat the record after todays snowfall? I haven't heard the total for our area yet. Posted by: Cindy Location: Western Dane County Hi Michelle! I love this snow! It is so beautiful and everything looks so fresh and new. It has really put me in the Christmas spirit. A couple years ago, we looked into moving to Montana where there is even MORE snow...alas, not too many jobs though. We love to x-c ski, sled, skate, and make snowmen with our girls. We have the Military Ridge bike trail right out our back door and try to take advantage of that year around. If it is too cold out, there is always some great flavored hot cocoa or spiced cider, a fire in the woodstove, popcorn and a great movie to keep winter at bay for a little while. Glad to hear you are excited about snow for Christmas. May you and Dan have a wonderful one!!!! Posted by: Jim Location: Madison And don't forget to introduce your cat to the wild wonderful world of snowballs! (even if the cat isn't white or named Snowball, haha) We go through this every year with the first snowball so our two have had their snow already. We always make one little snowball and bring it in for them to sniff, then watch them shake and bat the snow away and then run around to warm up. You'd think they'd learn after awhile, but noooooooo... Every year it's the same = "what's that, new toys for us?" And then WHOA!!! Posted by: 4 Paw Drive Location: Madison Oh, love the snow for recreation, hate it for finding the sidewalks when people don't shovel their "turf"! Awesome sledding at Elver Park, Olbrich park, and "Sanitarium hill on Madison's north side! And there's a culver's right across Northport drive for cocoa and hot curds to warm up inside! No sliding in parking lots this year kiddo! Kick his butt in snowball fight, and enjoy the "snuggle alert" days as Christine would call them! Personally, we all hunker down, cocoa in hand, and watch movies, play games, or listen to an internet radio station that has old time radio shows like Jack Benny! Merry Christmas and Happy new year! Hugs to you and Dan dude! Posted by: Dan Location: Baraboo I work for the City of Baraboo and have for the last 33 years. I have learned to hate snow!! The phone ringing in the middle of the nite. But next winter I can sit back and watch the trucks go by..I am retiring. Really enjoy watching you and the rest of the crew at channel 15. Is Charlie really as nutty off camera as he is on? Would love for him to come up to Baraboo and ride with me while I am plowing snow. Once again..keep up the great job all of you. Posted by: Alan Location: Western Dane County LOVE the snow! The more the better! Given the chance I'd move to the Utah mountains where they get 500" a year. Our family enjoys sledding, skiing, and building snowmen. What do we when we want to stay in? I put a fire in the wood stove and either pop in a movie or watch a Packers game, or we break out some games. We're glad to have you here. I don't know what the stats are, but I think it's about a 50-50 chance of a white Christmas. Merry Christmas Michelle and Dan! Posted by: ph Location: dane co. I was born and raised in Eau Claire, spent much time further North (mainly Rusk Co.). Lived several years away from Wisconsin (including 4 in So. California), returned to Wisconsin because I missed the Seasons. It's December in Wisconsin, wouldn't change it for anything... Posted by: Packer Fan Location: WI Michelle, When it gets REALLY cold, I start asking myself why I didn't move to Arizona or somewhere where it rarely gets very cold. What do we do? A good book, hot chocolate, snow football, a few weekends in the Dells, rent or see a good movie, etc. I agree that there should be snow for Xmas, but I think we are good now and really do not need any more. I am guessing that Dan will have his hands full if you have a snowball fight. Last time I went on a sled, I had a spectacular wipeout and was pretty sore after that. I hope you have better luck. Enjoy! Posted by: ARIC ANDREOLI Location: MADISON WI Great blog post OCM/Journalist Michell Riell. I totally enjoyed reading your blog posted on NBC 15. Hope you have some more intersting wx blog related issued. I like the snow. I can make some cold hard cash. I have my own snow shoveling business. I have had this business since age 10. I help my neighbors out in my neighborhood. when it snows. The most snow I shoveld or used a snoblower on was the witer of 1993-94 with a snow teason total of 76.4". That is teh most snow Madison wi has ever had in a snow season. For december our snowiest dec on record back in 2000 with 20" of snow will likely be replaced with a new snowfall record fordec 2007 if we get back 20" this month. The chances of that happening are more that 50% at this time. We will see what happens. Enjoy the snowfall and snow on the ground goes back teh the holiday song" Walking in a Winter Wonderland" |
