I'm sure most everyone in the news industry has had them, I certainly know I've had my fair share, although fortunately it doesn't happen too often. When I speak to schools, this is usually a common question I get from students and I generally have to think long and hard about it.

Usually my bloopers involve me laughing so hard I cry or am unable to talk, which happens periodically on Weekend Live. When I worked in Oregon, my co-host and I laughed so hard over some silly squirrel that we couldn't even compose ourselves in enough time to say “Goodbye.” We just laughed our way out of the show. In fact, since we were mostly new to the TV news business we had a lot of bloopers which we kept on a “Blooper Reel.” Before I left I dubbed them down to, then, VHS and dig it out occasionally for a laugh. Let's see, in Madison, I've dropped my clicker on air now, which is very embarrassing to have to bend over and pick up. Fortunately for us here, we have 2 clickers, so I just went and grabbed our spare. I've messed up my own name, making it come out something like, “Michelle Mreal or Remel.” Then, one morning I was talking about some story and instead of saying “cap” I said “crap” which caused a lot of laughing and teasing. And, I've got to say, the one I'm most worried about, which thankfully has not happened yet, is when I say something to the effect of, “Then winds will “shift” out of the NE.” Or, “This storm system “shifts” off to the east.” I'm deathly afraid one of these days it's going to come out of my mouth without the “f.” And, now I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the FCC in advance.

I try to keep my bloopers to a minimum, but when they happen, have the ability to laugh at myself and the situation. Many other have had much BIGGER bloopers, which are fun to watch and hopefully they can now laugh at their misfortune! Below are some links... thank you, youtube. Here's just a sampling, there are many other funny ones, just search, “local news bloopers” or “local news weather bloopers.” Fortunately for me, I haven't made youtube... yet!

Keep watching, smiling and laughing with us, after all it is live TV, anything can happen!

At least you've never done "snarlybliddadgrift"! A friend of mine in radio was trying to keep a pesky cough in check (perhaps Dan can relate) and had to say "... snarled due to a blizzard drift" and I swear he said something like "snarlybligglegrift"! he had almost swallowed his cough drop, and hadn't had time to spit it out before his cue came up to do weather/ traffic! Now, every winter, when there is a traffic back up somewhere in the midwest, we call him (now broadcasting in NM I think) and say "snarlybligglegrift!" and start laughing! At least he won't have to deal with snarly bliggle grifts where he's at! I'm just waiting to hear the tape of him screwing up "westerly winds working through"!

Typos in newspapers can be funny too. Changing just one letter can make all the difference. For example the want ad that read: "Small house for runt".

Michelle: I must say that my hubby and I watched the links you provided, and we do have our favorites. Hopefully none as blatant as these will befall you, but it does make good entertainment. Thanks for sharing!

This is funny, but I got another one here a meteorologist can relate to. The following is the address for another youtube video from our neighbor to the east at WTMJ in Milwaukee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0CghAKgY4E obviously I can not post this to your website, but the lesson is, never wear a piece of clothing the same color as the screen behind you when using a chromo-key effect. Enjoy!

I agree with Jerry. Now, I hope you haven't jinxed yourself...

michelle, i have a suggestion at the end of the newscast as the credits roll you should play the bloopers, i think it'd be great to see them on tv, kinda like they do in some movies
