I never got to see him play, being he was before my time and only lasted in the Majors a handful of years, but from everything I've gathered about the late Tiger pitcher Mark Fidrych (aka "The Bird") it seems as if Baseball could use a few more like him today. My Dad told me the other day, after hearing of his death, that he was one heck of a character and I believe him. He talked to the baseball, gave high fives to his infielders, and played with a passion that it seems a lot of athletes are without anymore. Baseball, as much as I respect it, just isn't as exciting as some other sports such as football and basketball. The games go by too slowly, and usually there is not enough offense. At least if you were to have a few more "Birds" it would fill in some of those dull moments at games. I think passion like that not only rubs off on teammates, but everyone in attendance. Mark Fidrych will be truly missed.

I think Carlos Zambrano fits this description fairly well, granted I'm a biased Cubs fan. How many pitchers do you see talking to themselves on the mound or breaking a bat over their knee after a bad at bat? Not many today.

How truly sad. My brother was a big fan of his, and as I recall had his poster up on the wall. For me, he was more of a curiosity, sort of like the Mad Hungarian. He was an original who made an sometimes unexciting game more fun to watch.

I think a big problem is the salaries these guys make. Since baseball has guaranted contracts and as long some guys get there $$$ the lure of "winning it all" is a distant image in the rear view mirror. I didn't see "The Bird" play either but from what I am hearing on various sports programs he seemed one of a kind.
