The easy answer to the question "Who's to blame?", when talking about Baseball's steroid era, can most easily be answered by saying the players. They make the choice to cheat, take the drugs, etc. They want to get bigger contracts, longer deals. Everyone wants to be "The Man". If you don't want to blame the players there's always Commissioner Bud Selig and the MLB brass. How come it took so long to get steroid testing in the sport? It's obviously because Selig is the worst commissioner of the 4 major sports. I mean we're talking about a guy who made the winner of the All-Star game get home field advantage in the World Series. What's better than turning a fun game into players wearing themselves out during the mid-summer classic? Still I believe it's not the players, nor the baseball brass who is to blame. I think the blame should fall on us the fans. Why? Because we are the ones who want to see "Superhuman" feats. No one really appreciates a guy like Kenny Lofton (one of my all-time favorites) who is just a fundamentally sound player but is never going to "wow" anyone. We want to see people like Bonds hit the ball 8,000 feet or pitchers throwing the ball at 115 mph. People love that stuff, but don't realize it's not all that realistic unless players are using. It's just quite sad what baseball has become. Hopefully, they expose about 100 more players to drill it in that it's not "OK", and if you use you will get caught. The game needs to be cleaned up now.

Nick, what do you have against Bud Selig? He tried to start testing and was unable to get it past the players union UNTIL CONGRESS MADE THEM. You don't mention any outrage of Donald Fehr in your blog. Athletes will use performance enhancers as long as there is money to be made and the MLB players union will always be pushing for higher contracts for players. I do agree that if the fans stopped going to games then change would happen more quickly.

Posted by: Brenda The users themselves are to blame! They are adults and know what they are doing. Have you ever just rolled up your sleeve for and injection without asking about it first? I doubt it! I hardly believe they trust their trainers that much, when they say it's a vitamin injection... or a pill.

It still comes down to personal responsibility. The players that make the choice to use/abuse should be banned from baseball. There used to be a time when the grass was real and so was the game. It seems that the "roid" problem is just another symptom of a society that wants everything bigger and better.
