As we approach the shutdown of our analog broadcast, I try to keep track of how many viewers still use an antenna, as compared with cable or satellite or telephone-company-delivered TV.

I made some interesting observations while looking up these numbers.

The Madison TV market officially covers 11 counties, even though we have viewers beyond those artificial borders.  (Jefferson County belongs to the Milwaukee TV market, but we know that you guys in Fort Atkinson, Lake Mills and Jefferson are watching us.)  Here are some statistics from the A.C. Nielsen company for the period between February and November 2008 that cover our 11-county area:

* The number of cable homes grew in 4 counties and dropped in 7 for a net loss of 4.3%.  Cable is now in less than 50% of homes in the Madison market.

* Satellite/telephone TV (what Nielsen calls "Alternative Delivery Systems") use dropped in 4 counties but gained in 7 for a net gain of 2.2%.

* The number of over-the-air (antenna) homes dropped in 3 counties, were even in 4 and grew in 4 for a net gain of 2.2%.

Amazingly (to me anyway), satellite/telephone TV and antenna TV homes are growing at the same rate.  It appears that half of cable subscribers who cancel their service are switching to satellite or phone-company TV.  The other half are going back to free over-the-air TV.

* Dane County added 8,520 homes using an antenna between February and November.

* Satellite/phone-company TV subscribers outnumber antenna users in every county except Dane.

* Satellite/telco TV beats cable in 8 out of the 11 DMA counties.  Cable wins big in Dane and Rock, and slightly in Sauk County.

Now, the bottom line.  We are at just over 25 days left for analog TV broadcasting.  Cable, satellite and phone-company TV homes should be worry-free.  Looking at antenna users though, Nielsen's estimate of "completely unready homes" for DTV was updated on January 18th, and is now down to 5.7% nationally.  Applying 5.7% to our market numbers gives an estimated 21,588 antenna homes which haven't converted even one analog TV in their home.

I hope Wisconsin procrastinates less than the national average.

A friend of mine has just been told she'll need to rent a converter box @ $3 per month above what she already pays them in order to keep getting a signal from Charter Cable. What are they talking about? She hasn't needed a converter so far.

I have a digital tv and an older vcr. I read once where I would need a converter box to record but I'm not sure how to hook up. Help

To the person with the DishNetwork problem--my local channels never changed. They're all there just the same as before. If you're going to DirecTV for locals, why not just add them to your DishNetwork account and save switching to another provider? Yeah, DirecTV has them all in HD (I think), but if you don't have a HD tv, it wouldn't matter.

To the experts brought in by WMTV who for the last 3 months kept saying that "if you subscribe to cable or a satellite company, there is nothing to do" - they were wrong! I have been a customer of Dish Network for the last 7 years. No local channels in my house now that the analog signal has been switched off. Dish Network was charging for local channel reception. I couldn't bring myself to do that when it was supposed to be "free tv". I guess I will have to switch to Direct TV as soon as it is safe to climb up on the roof. Until then, no more Charlie in the morning for me.

So this morning - I rescanned, I made sure my antenna was connected and voila I turned on my tv. Two things - all the channels are choppy with horizontal and vertical shadow lines and my audio is very fuzzy. In addition, my remote for the tv only adjusts the volume not the channels - so do I have to use the converter box remote to change a channel and the tv remote to adjust volume? Crazy!!

Sara in Madison: if you have an indoor antenna, you'll have to adjust or move it to a different location (higher usually helps). See the "Antenna help" blog link. === Marilyn in RC: try rescanning your converter after WXOW-TV channel 19 in La Crosse signs off their analog station, they may be interfering with our digital channel right now. === Dave in Portage: my Polaroid LCD set at home does the exact same thing, and I don't know why yet! Something in our 15.2 encoder only affects certain sets. Like yours and mine.

I have trouble with 15.2 looking choppy. I have a Sony XBR4 Tv about a year old. I get a signal of about 80 percent and have no trouble with 15.1. Any ideas?

I have indoor rabbit ears, can get channel 15 now without the box, can't get it with the box. Plan to put up an outdoor antenna and pray.... Is channel 15 turning off analog on Feb 17 now that the government has extended the date?

I have an antenna and an HD converter box and I am experiencing problems with signal loss only with channel 15. Is there a way to fix this or is the signal going to get stronger in the near future? Just wondering because I can't watch channel 15 without disconnecting the HD converter box now and in the near future that won't be an option. Thanks

Tom, we set up our converter box and of course we aren't getting channel 15. We have a roof top antena and are getting all other Madison channel's and we get WORT listener sponsored radio at our house so what gives with channel 15?
