Well, the FCC informed our attorney on Saturday, that due to a legal technicality, WMTV has to sign off its analog signal 24 hours earlier than expected, at the end of the day today (Feb. 16). So here we go. WISC, WKOW and WBUW will be shutting down their analog signals tomorrow during the day. WHA and WMSN will stay on in analog for the time being. It's been a bumpy road, and it could have been handled better by the government and consumer electronics manufacturers and dealers. We have done our best to follow each rule that was handed down to us, many of which were incredibly expensive. There was no coupon program for the TV stations that had to make the changes. The vast majority of antenna viewers are enjoying beautiful reception and extra free channels. It's unfortunate that some people are having trouble receiving all the digital channels due to antenna issues or poor converter box design. And it's not just channel 15.1 that is suffering. Some viewers have trouble receiving one or more of the other stations too. It's troubling from my point of view in that all the Madison stations are meeting and even exceeding FCC requirements, but from the viewer's standpoint, it's our fault when there's no picture. WMTV will be spending even more money this year to strengthen our digital signal AGAIN to make up for deficiencies on the receiving end. We can't afford to run two transmitters any longer. When Congress, in effect, snapped its fingers and said you can now stay on until June 12th, it once again delved into an area that a legislative body has no place being, changing technical regulations. I could talk for hours on how this should have occurred, what went wrong, and why viewers are having problems today. But I'd just sound like a geek, and it wouldn't fix Joe Viewer's reception problem tomorrow morning. So, for better or worse, we're gritting our teeth and pressing the OFF button on our Comark S-series TV transmitter tonight, after nearly 24 years of service. Farewell, analog.

Marlene - you need to connect your converter box between your antenna and your VCR. Set your VCR to record on channel 3 (yes, 3) for the time you want. Then make sure your converter box is ON (there should be a setting to keep it from turning itself off) and set to the channel you want to record. We have been taping Days of our Lives on 15-1 now for over two months and it works fine. Good luck! Jennifer - our signal has been erratic at times, too, and we only live a half-mile from Channel 15 and its tower. It's just the nature of the beast; weather, physical barriers like hills, and even other electrical interference will mess with the signal. Hopefully when the stations are able to broadcast a stronger signal this will clear up for you. Tom - thanks for this great blog/forum. Posted by: Steffi Location: far west side Madison As of today I have lost channels 15-1, 15-2 and 57-1. I have a digital TV with rabbit ears and it had been working great prior to today. The 2 channel 3's, the 2 channel 27's and 47-1 all work perfectly, in fact seemed better today than usual, not even freezing up or losing signal once. I've tried every thing I can with the antenna and don't think that's the problem since it worked fine yesterday. Please help. Posted by: jennifer Location: verona So here we are with Digital tv. Its like watching a dvd with scratches on it. The mega pixel is breaking up stopping speech and picture. Making unenjoyable to watch. And yet i wonder how many people couldnt afford this change and maybe it was to get them to not pay attention to the news and see how dismal our economy is. But in any case Id like to watch a show all the way threw with out missed images and words. This isnt working for us. How about any one else Posted by: Katy Location: Madison - West Well great, I have the spiffy Zenith digital converter, antenna, and getting great reception,(for a bunch of extra channels)and for 15-1 and 15-2, but this morning no Charlie with the weather :( but got instead got two 15-2's but no 15-1, what happened? Posted by: Marlene Location: Manchester I agree with Joan of Fort Atkinson. We will also need to replace any recording equipment we have. Our VCR's and DVD recorders will not work now - I have tried it. I work all day and record daytime programs, but all I recorded today was static and NO PICTURE! I really think the country has taken a step backward. Posted by: Anonymous Location: Wisconsin Dells Hallelujah! Kudos to channel 15 for sticking to the schedule. To the complainers, how long have we ALL known about this? YEARS AND YEARS. We fully switched over to all HD a couple years ago. We had plenty of time to put up an antenna on a mast and then when the signal wasn't strong enough, get an outside amplifier to get all the channels to come in. Shame on you all for waiting until the very last minute and then having the nerve to complain. And Tom? Be strong--I know you're going to bear the brunt of all this even though you're just doing what has been planned for years and years. Posted by: Joan Location: Fort Atkinson, Wi Free TV Huh. New tv, or a box and then the most expensive antenna so you might be able to pull in something. I don't call that free. Who is going to give me all of that free and install an antenna free. No one. I don't call that free. I will be tv less because I can't afford all of that. This is the dumbest idea yet. Posted by: Linda L. Location: Madison Tom - It kind of makes you wonder what people did for the thousands of years before television was invented, doesn't it? We live about half a mile from your station, and our converter box works like a charm even though we're "in the cone". If I had any questions I'd just ask my dad; he was a broadcast engineer for WKOW for almost 30 years. Speaking of asking questions - I heard that in order to shut down analog signals, the FCC required the Madison market to staff help lines for consumers to call. Any idea if that is happening? I could use a job! Thanks :) |
