Rachel, coming from Monroe some time ago, I can say with all certainty that you know not of what you speak. The Monroe police department is not able to protect every citizen 24 hours a day. So it is with all police forces. The crime problems have much more to do with citizens not being allowed to take care of themselves, and law makers catering to criminals' rights rather than victims.

To Rachel: If you live in Monroe how are you judging the police here? Monroe has crime and it is foolish for you to think we would believe it didn't. What's the difference in population between Monroe and Madison? This is a much bigger city with much more crime, thats a given. What Monroe doesn't have any of these? Are you out of yur mind? Let's talk to your police and ask them if they have these problems! Maybe not the murder, but are you telling me there has never been one? Stay in Monroe, that's where a small minded person belongs!

WOW! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I used to have the same neg att that some of you do. But then I had an experiance that changed that. I went to another country & saw how their law enforcment ran. Let me tell ya. I was scared. I was caught in the middle of a police raid. For what reason? Well it was what they called a Red Flag Alert. Which was that there were people drinking alcohol. Easy targets for them (police) to take money from their own people. I will take our police over them any day. If we could work together as a community (law enforcement, city officials, & cititzens) we truly could make this better. Don't put all the blame on those that put their lives on the line for us for the stupidiness of those commiting the crimes. Lets pull together as the great city of Madison we are & try to help ea other & stop blaming everyone else. As far paying those who protect us you seen 1 of their paycks? I wouldn't do what they do for what they get paid!!!!!

In response to Rachel...you are the joke. How can you expect the police to be everywhere all the time to prevent every crime!!! People need to be vigilant and many of these crimes do get solved, it's just not wrapped up in a one-hour tv show that you probably watch. It is clear you have no idea of what you are talking about. To say that there isn't anything being done is just naive. Please don't ever call the police because you are not worth their resources. And you say you live in a community that doesn't have ANY of these problems...must be Antarctica. Get a clue.

I have worked in and visited Madison for over 20 years. I went to school here as well. After Mayor Dave arrived, crime got bad. That is the apsolute truth of it. Citizens over 40 years old are SHOCKED by how much crime exists. It is not our job to keep the city safe. So we walk in groups. What about the little girl who missed her ride and has to walk home? What about the elderly man who did not get home before dark? What about the college student... Oh, they get murdered! I don't care if you came from HELL, Madison needs more law enforcement and the money is no longer there.

I moved here from Detroit two years ago and let me tell you, this IS a safe place to live! Be aware of your surroundings no matter what city/town/village your'e in and don't travel alone after dark without pepper spray or a loud keychain whistle at the minimum.

Protection, what proctection? The Madison City Police Department is nothing but a big JOKE! If they protected their citizens as well as other people claim they do they wouldn't have news stories on television about rapes, murders, drug raides, violence! It's not going to be totally crime free and I understand that but there's still a lot that could be done in the city and there isn't anything being done at all!! I can proudly say that at least I live in a community that doesn't have any of these problems and the police actually do their jobs!!

Travel in groups. Don't give criminals the idea that you are easy pickings. Re> Hanna's and JJ's posts, I agree completely. Banning law abiding citizens from protecting ourselves hasn't worked. It's time to allow us to defend ourselves as we see fit.

I STILL feel proud to live in Madison and I feel the police department does a very good job. Yes, there are quite a high number of very serious crimes, and yet I believe that they are trying their hardest to solve these. Do you really believe these guys and gals go home and don't lay awake all night and worry? My guess is they are just as disturbed and frustrated as we are but they are in the front lines trying to solve it. What did you do today to try and make your city safer? You know, volunteer for a free ride program, anything?

Posted by: Hanna Location: not Madison!!! on Apr 28, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Its to bad Madison is were it is at with the crime level, robberies everyday...6 unsolved homicides! and a Serial killer to boot... Take a look at the MPD website for press releases. http://www.cityofmadison.com/incidentReports/incidentList.cfm?page=1&a=71 It just keeps getting worse. Citizens of Madison you are responsible for YOUR own saftey. I think its time WI finally gets on the band wagon for CCW to law abiding citizens.

homer, you're an idiot. blaming cops for catching drunk drivers, that's real smart. You probably are upset because you are one of those drunk drivers. In fact, maybe you've even killed someone while driving drunk. And I'm pretty sure these donut eating cops could take you down w/o much problem.

Posted by: homer j. Location: springfield on Apr 28, 2008 at 03:14 PM
c'mon, the cops are all too busy eating donuts and trying to catch the thousands of drunk drivers that operate in madison at any given time, doh!

Posted by: jj Location: pds on Apr 28, 2008 at 02:08 PM
That's the problem. Everyone wants protection but no one wants to pay for it. we don't want to pay to keep these thugs locked up, and we don't want to pay to put more cops on the street. What's the name of that one group of motorcyclers that do "patrols" for cities? Maybe someone needs to get ahold of them. And I believe in having the right to carry a weapon.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 28, 2008 at 01:09 PM
Immediate death should be brought upon these thugs, that's the only way to get their attention.

Posted by: crystal on Apr 28, 2008 at 12:48 PM
this is crazy... why are these people not getting caught?!?! lastnight my friend was held at gun point for her money... the cops did come but i had no idea that there where some many things like this in the madison area. i wish that they would do something more to protect the men women nad chlidren who live here!
