What has happened to the city I grew up in? I've been back to visit from time to time, but fear it will become a small city with big city problems. As a former big city Police Officer, Madison needs to hire not 30, but 100-120 more officers per year. You see, there isn't the bulk of officers to be proactive right now. The thugs ruining the north, central, and westside, need get used to seeing 2-man patrol cars swarming around. They need to fear getting jacked-up, having their name run for warrants. Each police district would be smart to designate 4 or 5, 2-man cars to just make aggresive field interviews and traffic stops in these known drug and gang active areas. There is nothing wrong or unconstitutional with this. Sensitivity and all these useless programs and meetings must be replaced with proactive policing. Panhandlers, prostitutes, and loud car stereo's must not be accepted. This isn't what made Madison the best place to live. Please demand this before it is too late!

How many more murders do we have to have before MPD solves one?

I talked to the alderperson in this district Lauren Cnare. All you get is "report problems when you see them, join your neighborhood association, don't be afraid of your neighborhood, get out and enjoy it..." I think she is as clueless as Mayor Dave & the police dept. This morning I saw a bunch of new graffitti on buildings that have recently been hit. I wish for just once that a business owner would catch these thugs and take matters into their own hands.

Aggravated assault. If a suspect causes such injury purposely, knowingly, or recklessly in circumstances where the person has exhibited indifference to human life.

So, is concealed carry allowed or what? I'd LOVE to be able to wear a holster with a gun under my clothes. These days it seems the good people are the only ones that have NO guns. Why SHOULDN'T we carry guns if we're honestly not going to harm anyone other than those who may harm us. I grew up around guns and feel there's nothing wrong with them as long as your trained to use them and ONLY use them if necessary. I guarantee if Jody Foster in "The Brave One" would have walked up on her attackers in the movie with a gun in her hand..she wouldn't have lost her loved one that night. I know, it's a movie...but I wouldn't doubt if that kind of stuff happens to individuals every day. I'd much rather kill or hurt someone if I needed to than be killed or hurt myself.

Suspects still at large... Imagine that in Madison. I'm sure nobody is all that surprised. Mayor Dave, its time you do something to address the ever increasing amount of crime. With the uncertain economic times, it is only going to get worse. You need to start anticipating rather than reacting. Unfortunately, you don't even react well which doesn't say much for your ability to anticipate.

I dont think the race of the victem is really important is it? I do agree though, if it were whites beating a black person, it would be classified as a hate crime if the investigating officers deemed it to be true.

Rachel, the point of concealed carry is to have the opportunity to protect yourself if you so choose. It's not about being better than the criminal. It's about being alive at the end of the day, and being allowed to make that decision as a responsible adult. Not everyone likes guns, and that is okay. But no one should have the right to tell me I have no right to protect myself the way I see fit.

Rachel - the point of concealed carry is it's legal if you have a permit. So if you had a permit, you WOULDN'T be charged for carrying concealed. Duh!!

What do you people think carrying a concealed weapon is going to change??!! It wouldn't make you out to be any better than the ones with the guns to begin with! You might shoot the person or people to end up protecting yourselves, but then you're the one that gets charged for carrying the concealed weapon, duh!!

I HAVE 2 WORDS FOR YOU....CONSEALED CARRY!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 30, 2008 at 07:46 AM
THEY CANT GIVE THE RACE OF THE VICTIM CAUSE ONCE THE BLACK COMMUNITY HEARS THEY BEAT A WHITE GUY, THE WHITE COMMUNITY WILL BE DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THE BLACK COMMUNITY FOR PICKING ON THEM.

Posted by: carma on Apr 30, 2008 at 06:33 AM
please be careful when out and about, watch your surroundings. Hope this victim is going to be ok.

Posted by: jj Location: wi on Apr 29, 2008 at 08:59 PM
ok, this ticks me off. Why is the race of the victim not noted? If it were 3 white guys that beat up a black guy the media would be all over it as a hate crime.

Our city and it's citizens need to start addressing the actions of certain groups of people in this city. If we keep ignoring it, we are going to end up like Beloit. These actions can't be tolerateed, can't be blamed on police- we need to place the blame where it belongs- on the people who commit these crimes and the people to encourage or accept their behaviors.

Our daughter has an apartment around S. Park and she usually has a creepy story about people loitering around her apartment complex. Or she'll be awakened in the middle of the night because someone is screaming obscenities in the parking lot. I think America is going to the dogs! Sure isn't how I was brought up!

This is old New's any more !!. Thug's like these should be taught a lesson !! I wonder how Big and Bad they would be Looking Down the barrel of a 44 mag. !! They would run like the Chicken Sh-ts they are. Yah there tough in numbers but weak when alone !! It is time to bear arm's and show this trash what it is all about.

The police don't care what happens elsewhere in the city. They are only worried about the downtown/campus area. At any given time you will see packs of police patrolling the downtown areas.

I believe concealed carry should be allowed without question. Criminals do it; law abiding citizens should have the legal right. But there's more to it than just carrying a weapon. You have to learn the things to avoid; like walking alone at 1130 at night. That is a recipe for disaster in this area. Of course the criminals already know they won't meet armed resistance, and that probably makes them bolder.

Conceal and carry is the only solution if we do not have enough police on the street. It is unfortunate but we do not deserve to be victimized like this. I think that Mayor Dave should move to Allied Drive, or downtown, or the North Side, or the West Side off Gammon. Hm, looks like Madison is getting pretty bad!

this is terrible, daily occurrance, I feel like i live in LA! Good god. Better off to move the "L" outta here

I live on this street so I hope these thugs are caught and sent to prison for a while. Our neighborhood has seen a rise in stuff like this. Would be nice if police had more of a presence. Certainly has me thinking about changing my mind on conceal & carry.
