A long stakeout doesn't end in an arrest, but Madison police think they've got the get-away car from a bank robbery.

At 9:15 Friday morning Madison Police say three men held up the Bank Mutual on Odana Road. Witnesses saw three young black males dressed all in black enter the bank and then run out and jump in a car described as an older, white Chrysler Lebaron, with a soft top and no license plate.

The suspects headed south on Whitney Way.

Shortly after 11 am an NBC 15 newscrew saw a car matching that description in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Gilbert Road, just a few blocks south of the bank. Police just asked us to watch from a safe distance while they waited for the suspects to come back.

Just before 4 police rushed the car and searched the apartment building. A lieutenant says they did not find anyone related to the car in the area.

Police had staked out the area all day, at one point asking a nearby business if they had a room facing the car with windows that would open. Dave Larson works at the American Family Insurance office. "I don't think they're going to be yelling real loud at the people. We thought it was so they could be prepared with a gun or a firearm."

NBC 15 has confirmed the men who robbed the bank may be connected to an attempted homicide from last week.

On April 29th, a young black male forcibly entered an apartment on the 2200 block of Post Road in Fitchburg. Police say the man shot the resident, sending them to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Police say in that case they believe there were two more black males waiting in a car, a car that potentially matched the car used in this morning's bank robbery.

Fitchburg Police say they believe the attempted homicide was a targeted attack and the community is not at risk.

They are working with Madison Police to determine if the suspects are indeed the same.
