On Monday morning a 91-year-old Madison woman contacted police after being swindled out of nearly $3,400.
The victim had received a phone call on June 23rd from someone who said, "Hello Grandma."
She thought it was her 13-year-old grandson from Texas. The caller said he was in Canada, and in need of bail money after getting into some sort of alcohol incident while driving.
The grandmother went to a Wal-Mart in Sun Prairie and sent a MoneyGram to a reference number - provided by the thief - in Toronto.
She later called Texas to see if her grandson had made it home safely, and discovered he had never left the Lone Star State.

My aunt got the same call about 2 weeks ago. A sharp lady at the Western Union office alerted her to call and verify that her nephew was really the caller. Of course he was not and she did not loose any money. The scam was not a success.
When my daughter calls my dad, my dad doesn't ask for her name. They just assume. But from now on she not only will have to supply her name but also the last four digits of her S.S. number. What a sad world!!
Criminals who prey on the elderly are a special kind of sick!!I know this kind of thing happens alot, and i am so sorry for this woman !
