Over the past two years the intersection of Mulberry and Chestnut Streets in Sauk City has been the site of a unique type of vandalism. At least on six occasions someone has thrown sharp objects on the road where the two streets meet.

Half inch nails were recovered from the last incident that happened on June 22. But larger nails and tacks have also been used and they have punctured or at least damaged a lot of tires.

"Everyone here has had repairs having to be done to their tires and cars as a result of it," said resident Jackie Bascom. "We have had five or six patches done and a few tires replaced. If you don't get it done in time then you have to replace the tire."

But even after two years, police have no leads and no clues as to who the suspects may be.

Said Lt. Travis Hilliard, "It is very specific to this intersection. So there is some type of connection with the neighborhood or possibly a connection with somebody in the neighborhood. It's a specific target. It is not happening anywhere else in the community between the Village of Sauk City or Prairie Du Sac."

And the hardest part for the neighborhood is that unless someone sees the vandals do it, it will be hard to catch them.

"That alone is frustrating and just trying to identify who would do that to a nice little neighborhood like this with a lot of little kids riding their bikes and parents that are working hard. I don't know," added Bascom. "It is just really frustrating."

The neighborhood has come together and everyone knows what is happening, so if it does happen, again they will be ready.

From the Sauk Prairie Police Department:

The Sauk Prairie Police Department is investigating a suspicious activity complaint in the Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street Neighborhood in the Village of Sauk City.

Residents living in this neighborhood have called the police to the intersection of Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street over the last several months for tacks and nails in the roadway. These items have been placed in the intersection intentionally. Area homeowners have taken it upon themselves to clean these items out of the roadway when this happens. A number of tires have been damaged by driving over these items.

The Sauk Prairie Police Department would like assistance from residents living in this area to call the police immediately if suspicious vehicles are observed or if any items of this nature are found in the intersection. The individual or individuals responsible for this senseless act will be charged to the fullest extent of the law and will be required to pay the restitution costs for damages.

If you or anyone else has information regarding this incident or any other crime, please call the Sauk Prairie Police Department through the Sauk County Communications Center at 1-800-377-1195 or through Crime Stoppers at 1-888-TIP-SAUK. Callers may remain anonymous.

In a small town, it's unusual for a crime to go unsolved for this long. There are 40 children who are also being endangered by this act of violence. The retribution bill is growing and we all know that eventually, this criminal will be caught. Thanks to Channel 15 for the crime stopping help!
