VIDEO REPORT: Absentee Balloting In Dane County Up

Posted Thursday May 24, 2012 --- 5: 30 p.m.

According to Diane Hermann-Brown, Sun Prairie's City Clerk, so far this recall election has been anything but typical.

" This election we're seeing everybody come in. We're seeing younger people. We have a number of college students who have been in here and we're seeing a lot of the 30 and 40-year-olds with the younger kids type thing coming in. "

Even more surprising than who's been voting is the number of people casting ballots absentee. In Sun Prairie at least 400 people have voted absentee at the clerks office. Another 500 ballots have been mailed out.

By the end of Thursday they will surpass the number of absentee ballots cast in the primary.

" We're all just a mirror image. Any municipality the size of Sun Prairie anything over 15, 20-thousand they're getting lines. They're in the hundreds of ballots per day type thing, " says Hermann-Brown.

Verona, Fitchburg and Middleton are all reporting a high turn out. In Verona they've almost had as many people vote absentee in four days as they did during the 2010 midterm. In Madison because of the high number of calls they've installed a new phone system.

Absentee balloting may be up in Sun Prairie but the number of registrations is actually down. So far they've only had 34.
