Baldwin Confident About Chances of Beating Thompson

Posted Wednesday, August 15, 2012 --- 10:46 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Democratic Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin says there's a lot to do between now and November, but she's confident she can beat Republican opponent Tommy Thompson in the fall.

Thompson knocked off three other Republicans in Tuesday's primary. Baldwin was unopposed as a Democrat.

On Wednesday, Baldwin toured a Milwaukee manufacturer of solar parts. She told reporters afterward that she has a history of fighting to preserve manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin, while Thompson has spent the last few years working for special interests.

Baldwin has served seven straight terms in Congress, representing the Madison area. She gave up her House seat to run for the Senate.

Thompson was Wisconsin's governor for 14 years and he served in President George W. Bush's administration. But he hadn't been on a ballot since 1998.
