UPDATE: Planned Parenthood urges public to watch debate

UPDATED Wednesday, September 18, 2013 --- 11:38 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is not directly addressing claims made by a nonprofit cable network that the group misused footage of Republican Senate President Mike Ellis taken from debate over an abortion bill.

WisconsinEye Public Affairs Network on Tuesday accused Planned Parenthood of violating its user agreement by using the footage of Ellis in a political ad. The footage used showed Ellis, of Neenah, banging his gavel and shouting at lawmakers during debate of a bill requiring doctors who perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges. The ad has been airing on television stations in Green Bay.

Planned Parenthood attorney Nicole Safar responded Wednesday, urging the public to watch the entire debate to "make their own decision about Sen. Mike Ellis."

Safar does not address WisconsinEye's accusations.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ā€” The nonprofit cable network WisconsinEye Public Affairs Network says Planned Parenthood knowingly misused video from legislative debate to mislead viewers of a political ad targeting Republican Senate President Mike Ellis.

The footage used showed Ellis, of Neenah, banging his gavel and shouting at lawmakers during debate of a bill requiring doctors who perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges. The ad has been airing on television stations in Green Bay.

WisconsinEye president Jon Henkes said Tuesday that Planned Parenthood violated its user agreement for the footage it purchased from the network that broadcasts all legislative debate online and on cable.

Henkes says he was issuing a statement to discourage other potential misuses of the network's content.

A spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
