MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Republican state senator who has drawn the ire of others within his party for siding with Democrats on major issues will face a primary challenger should he seek re-election next year.
State Rep. Howard Marklein says he intends to run for the 17th Senate district covering southwest Wisconsin currently held by state Sen. Dale Schultz.
Marklein, of Spring Green, announced his candidacy on Saturday night. Schultz responded with a statement Sunday saying he won't make a decision on whether to seek his seventh term in the Senate until early next year.
Schultz is a former Republican Senate majority leader but has angered members of his party by voting against Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining bill in 2011 and opposing a mining bill that passed the Senate earlier this year.
