JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Former Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan wants to return to state politics.

Sheridan announced his candidacy for Senate District 15 Sunday. The Democrat represented the 44th Assembly District from 2005 to 2010 when he lost to Republican Joe Knilans. Sheridan is a former General Motors employee and president of United Auto Workers Local 95. He quit his job as a lobbyist for the state AFL-CIO last month to run for the Senate.

Sheridan faces a primary Aug. 12 against Evansville Rep. Janis Ringhand and Austin Scieszinski, a Janesville native with ties to Sen. Tim Cullen, who is leaving the seat.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Former Democratic Wisconsin Assembly speaker turned union lobbyist Mike Sheridan is considering running for an open state Senate seat.

Sheridan tells the Janesville Gazette in a story published Friday that he is mulling a run for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Tim Cullen.

Sheridan lost his Assembly seat in 2010 after he disclosed he was dating a lobbyist for the payday loan industry around the time he softened his stance on regulating that industry.

Sheridan has lobbied for the AFL-CIO since 2012. He tells the newspaper that he is considering a run after Democratic state Rep. Andy Jorgensen decided to seek re-election to the Assembly rather than vie for the Senate seat.

Democratic Rep. Janis Ringhand, of Evansville, has announced she is running for the seat.
