VIDEO REPORT: Gov. Walker Announces Domestic Violence Investment

UPDATED Wednesday, February 13, 2013--5:50p.m.

MADISON--Last year the DAIS shelter saw a 33 percent increase in people seeking to stay at the shelter. "DAIS actually operates the smallest domestic violence shelter per capita of the entire state," said Executive Director Shannon Barry.

That means they sometimes have to wait list the people who need their help. "This really does have statewide repercussions because when we have wait lists here what we're unfortunately doing is sometimes creating a burden on other domestic violence programs across the state when we're not able to shelter folks here," she said.

That's why they're trying to raise the funds to create a new 56 bed shelter; that's more than double the capacity of the current one.

They need to raise about $5.6 million for the building--and today the governor is announcing that he'd like the state to chip in more than half a million dollars to help out. "This is a huge, huge, huge contribution to this campaign," said Barry. "I mean it's 10 percent of the entire construction budget."

And they're hoping that new site can help keep more women and children safe."It's critically important that there's not only space available but that they feel safe and that they are indeed safe," said Gov. Walker.
