MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A group of female GOP lawmakers are demanding Emily's List retract its endorsement of Democratic attorney general hopeful Susan Happ.

Happ, Jefferson County's district attorney, won the endorsement in March. The Washington-based group helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights.

Five female Republican legislators sent a letter Tuesday to Emily's List saying Happ doesn't deserve the endorsement. They pointed out Happ's office last year deferred prosecution of an alleged sex offender after he bought Happ's house and she argued for a light sentence for a child molester while she was working as a defense attorney.

Happ's campaign said she's put sex predators behind bars and criminal defendants have a right to an attorney in America.

An Emily's List spokeswoman says Republicans are desperate to stop Happ's campaign.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin attorney general hopeful Susan Happ has secured a key endorsement from an influential Democratic group.

Emily's List, a Washington-based political group that helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, announced Tuesday that has endorsed Happ. An Emily's List endorsement often gives candidates a considerable boost in fundraising from the group's network of donors.

Happ, the Jefferson County district attorney, is one of three Democrats vying for the attorney general post. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne and state Rep. Jon Richards are in the mix as well. The three of them will square off in an August primary. The survivor will go on to face Waukesha County's Republican district attorney, Brad Schimel, in the November general election.

Incumbent Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen isn't seeking re-election.
