Hovde Defends Tech Company's Government Deals

POSTED: Thursday, August 2, 2012 --- 9:55 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde rails against lucrative government contracts on the campaign trail, but records show that a tech company he has a significant stake in scored more than $70 million in deals primarily with the U.S. Defense Department since 2005.

Hovde defends the contracts ePlus made with the government, saying they are not the kind of sweetheart deals he campaigns against. Hovde said Thursday that ePlus sold computer equipment and other technology to the government, "like thousands upon thousands of other companies do."

Hovde is in a four-way race for the Republican nomination on Aug. 14. His campaign is built around his distaste for wasteful government spending, including what he derides as "sweetheart deals" and "cronyism."
