UPDATE: President Obama to Appear at Milwaukee Rally as Lead Widens

UPDATED Wednesday, September 19, 2012 --- 12:42 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- President Barack Obama plans to host a rally on the Summerfest grounds in Milwaukee on Saturday as two new polls show his lead in the state is widening.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows Obama with a 51 percent to 45 percent lead over Republican Mitt Romney. The poll of 1,485 likely voters conducted Sept. 11 through Monday has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

A Marquette University Law School poll also released Wednesday shows Obama leading Romney 54 percent to 40 percent. That poll of 601 likely voters was conducted Sept. 13 through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

That Obama lead is up from 6 points in the August Marquette poll.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- President Barack Obama is planning to visit Wisconsin later this month -- another sign of the state's battleground status.

An invitation says Obama will hold a fundraiser and roundtable discussion at the Milwaukee Theater on Sept. 22.

Donors must give a minimum of $250 to attend the general reception in Milwaukee. Those who contribute $5,000 to the Democratic president's campaign fund are also invited to a photo reception and VIP reception.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/PeAC3J) reports the cost to attend a roundtable discussion with Obama is $25,000.

Ben Sparks, a spokesman for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney criticized Obama for dropping into Wisconsin simply to raise campaign cash.

Obama's campaign told The Associated Press it had no comment.

This would be Obama's first visit to Wisconsin since February.
