UPDATE: Republican Nass to run for state Senate

UPDATED Wednesday, May 7, 2014 --- 1:45 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Rep. Steve Nass is running for the state Senate.

Nass announced Wednesday that he will seek the Senate seat in southeastern Wisconsin being vacated by retiring Sen. Neal Kedzie.

The Republican Kedzie announced on Tuesday that he was stepping down after more than 17 years in the Legislature.

Nass is a conservative from Whitewater who has been a frequent and outspoken critic of the University of Wisconsin. He also sponsored a bill signed into law that makes it easier for schools to keep Indian and other race-based mascots.

Kedzie and Rep. Tyler August, who also lives in the Senate district, both are endorsing Nass.

The other state representative in the district, Republican Amy Loudenbeck, of Clinton, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The sudden and unexpected retirement announcement of Republican state Sen. Neal Kedzie has another long-serving conservative lawmaker considering a run for the seat.

Mike Mikalsen, the spokesman for Rep. Steve Nass, of Whitewater, says Nass is seriously considering a run and will announce his decision as soon as Wednesday.

Mikalsen says Nass has spoken with the other two Republican representatives in the Senate district and they've agreed to support Nass should he run.

Neither Rep. Tyler August, of Lake Geneva, nor Rep. Amy Loudenbeck, of Clinton, returned messages seeking comment.

The 58-year-old Kedzie, of Elkhorn, announced Tuesday he would not seek re-election after serving more than 17 years in the Legislature, including the past 12 in the solidly Republican Senate district. He previously had announced he would run again.
