UPDATE: Bill allowing guns at schools won't get vote

UPDATED Wednesday, October 30, 2013 --- 7:07 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A proposal to allow off-duty, retired and out-of-state police officers to carry concealed weapons at Wisconsin schools won't be getting a vote in the state Assembly.

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos's spokeswoman Kit Beyer said Wednesday that the measure will not be voted on. Beyer did not immediately respond to an email asking why.

The proposal is sponsored by Republican Rep. Joel Kleefisch, the chairman of the Assembly's Criminal Justice Committee.

Kleefisch wants to broaden his bill to allow anyone with a concealed weapon permit to carry guns in school buildings and on school grounds. Kleefisch planned to put that idea to a committee vote Thursday, but says he didn't expect that amendment to be adopted.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Concealed weapons would be allowed on school grounds in Wisconsin under a proposal up for a vote Thursday.

The Republican chairman of the Assembly's Criminal Justice Committee says he will offer the amendment but he does not expect it to pass. Rep. Joel Kleefisch, of Oconomowoc, says his goal is to start a discussion about how to make schools safer.

But Kleefisch concedes he doesn't know whether citizens want to allow it.

Allowing anyone to carry concealed weapons on school grounds is opposed by groups representing school district administrators and school boards.

The amendment is being offered to a bill he is sponsoring that would allow off duty, out of state and retired police officers to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.
