Revoking Cultural Center Funding Vote on Hold

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Rep. Dean Kaufert says he will not call for a vote to revoke a $250,000 grant given to help build a Native American cultural center.

Kaufert had proposed revoking the funding after Lake Superior Chippewa tribes dramatically increased their walleye spearfishing goals, a move Kaufert says would hurt tourism in northern Wisconsin.

But Kaufert tells The Associated Press on Wednesday that he's delaying until May the vote before the state Building Commission. He says he doesn't want to interfere with ongoing negotiations between the state and tribe.

Kaufert says Department of Natural Resources officials and tribal leaders are scheduled to talk on Monday. He says he's willing to put on hold any vote to revoke funding for the Lac du Flambeau cultural center project until after that meeting.
