Mike Doyle, the Green County Clerk, believes his office is overworked.

" It's gotten to the point where it's financially unsubstainable and we need to talk with the GAB and see what we can do resolve these issues. "

There are 24 municipal clerks in Green County. Doyle and his office assists 20 of them with everything from the statewide voter registration datatbase to canvass reporting.

Thursday Doyle met with the Government Accountability Board or GAB to express his concerns. After the two and half hour meeting GAB representative Reid Magney spoke with us. He says the GAB is well aware of some of the challenges facing municipal clerks in small, rural areas.

" We recognize that many of the things that have come down from both the federal and state level have had a significant impact on the clerks. "

But it's not just federal and state regulation making things difficult for clerks like Doyle. Technology also poses a problem.

" We still have about 100 clerks out there, municipal clerks, who don't have any e-mail, " says Magney..

This year hasn't made things any easier. Before the recall madness there were four scheduled elections in Wisconsin. Magney says we've had at least double that figure.

" All these new things have happened, funding for elections has been about the same or maybe decreased. "

The rules and regulations for clerks come from the state legislature. Magney says his office will pass along Doyle's concerns and they want to work with lawmakers to ease the workload.
