Wis. governor hopeful would cut school vouchers

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke says the state should not have expanded the private school voucher program statewide or created a new private school tax deduction.

Burke said Tuesday that the state should not be subsidizing with taxpayer money the choice parents make to send their children to private school. Burke, who is a member of the Madison School Board, spoke at a luncheon hosted by the political website wispolitics.com.

The former Trek Bicycle Corp. executive and state Commerce Department secretary says the voucher program is one of several budget cuts she would make if elected.

The program had been operating only in Milwaukee and the Racine area but the Republican Legislature last year voted to expand it statewide.

Burke is challenging Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
