UPDATE: Baldwin joins Johnson on budget committee

UPDATED Thursday, October 17, 2013 --- 2:58 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin has been appointed to the bipartisan committee assigned to come up with a long-term budget agreement.

The Democrat will join Wisconsin Republicans Ron Johnson and Paul Ryan on the committee. Ryan is expected to co-chair the group.

Baldwin said Thursday in a statement that she was proud to support the compromise that ended the 16-day partial government shutdown and she looks forward to working across party lines to come up with a longer-term solution.

She says now is the time for both parties to work together to create a responsible budget that invests in the middle class, strengthens the economy and takes a balanced approach to reducing the deficit.
