Midori Shaw has kids in seventh and eighth grade at Kromrey Middle school, but if a November 6th referendum passes, she could soon have a third child studying in the school: "I would have the first class of a fifth grader coming here," she said.

You may be surprised at the thought of fifth graders in middle school --- but that's exactly the move district officials are hoping for.
"We have overcrowding really pretty much at every level of the district," said Superintendent Don Johnson. "But it's most prominent at the elementary school level. So we have six elementary schools, all of them are over capacity."

So they're putting two referendum questions to voters next week. In a nutshell, they're looking to rebuild and expand Kromrey Middle School--and expand Glacier Creek Middle School. As well as expanding the revenue limit to help with operating costs.
"Rebuilding Kromrey allows us to put fifth graders there and expansion of Glacier Creek also allows us to put fifth graders there," said Johnson. which makes space......for all elementary schools by moving fifth grade out of the current elementary configuration."

If both questions pass, the impact on taxes could be around $70 a year. That's a district estimate, based on a $100,000 property value.
"That's based on a four and a half percent interest rate and right now the rates are closer to three percent," said Johnson. "And with any luck when we go out to bond we can actually reduce that."

Shaw tells us she plans to vote yes on both counts. "I've been PTA for two years so I have experienced this school and it definitely needs to be rebuilt," she said.

But getting support for the referendums with the rest of the voting population could be tough: Johnson says seventy or so percent of the voters in the area are not parents.
