Study: Banning smoking increases drunken driving

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Enacting city smoking bans appears to increase drunken driving.

That's according to a new national study of arrests by Wisconsin researchers.

It says fatal accidents involving alcohol increased in ban areas and along their borders after smoking bans are enacted.

The researchers think that's because people drive farther to find places with outdoor smoking areas or to drink in areas without bans.

One of the researchers, Scott Adams of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, says the answer might be a federal ban on smoking in public places. He says that would help eliminate traveling to drink.

But Smoke Free Wisconsin Executive Director Maureen Busalacchi says she doesn't think it's right to link smoking bans to drunken driving. She says people could be traveling for a variety of reasons.

BS!!! They are just wanting to blame all the smokers. Everyone has the choice to drink and drive. Those that do are stupid. Plain and simple. Do a study on how many non-smokers are driving drunk and killing our frends and reletives. Let the people that choose and have the right to smoke do so. Where are our freedoms going to?

This is ridiculous!!! There are non-smoking and smoking drinkers out there!!! Those who choose to drink too much, simply do so. Maybe these drunk drivers were smokers too...and couldn't see through the cloud in their car, which prevented them from seeing the road while already impaired by alcohol???

A federal smoking ban?? Come on! Drinking and driving is a choice.. a bad choice, but it's still a choice, and smoking is also a choice! The government has better things to enforce than not allowing people their choice to have a cigarette. Seriously people! I'm embarassed for the researcher that even suggested that..

Don't believe their thinking caps were on straight in the first place. ban smoking, so they can get plastered without the smoke, then go out on the highways and kill or maim someone, or how about spouse and child abuse caused from alcohol. A lot more accidents caused from the alcohol than smoking.

They are just making guesses. It could also be more people are going out to bars that like a non-smoking environment. Or it could be more people are just drinking and driving.
