All health systems face significant cuts in federal Medicare and Medicaid. The new federal health care law (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - PPACA) requires all health systems to think differently about the way health care is provided – from treating the sick and injured to a model that promotes better health and health outcomes. Our vision is to position Meriter as a leader and embrace health care reform.
Reimbursement is changing dramatically. Hospitals in Wisconsin will see a reduction of $3.6 billion in Medicare reimbursement beginning in January.
Earlier today we shared with Meriter employees a plan that realigns positions in preparation for these significant cuts in Medicare reimbursement. Of our 3500 employees less than 4 percent were directly impacted. This change impacted all levels in the organization. We expect approximately 50 employees will have their position eliminated or decline re-deployment to another position.
We are doing all we can to help affected employees manage through this difficult change. We’re matching employees from eliminated positions to open positions. And for those who cannot find a home in the new structure, we are providing career assistance and continuing their pay and benefits through the remainder of the year.
We are working to keep people healthy and out of the hospital. Meriter is focused on providing the highest level of health and well-being while at the same time helping control costs, improving efficiencies and providing greater quality.
Although change is not easy, we must embrace change and proactively face this new environment.
