According to the Portage School District's Superintendent Charles Poches this week the board approved a motion to give 11 staff members nonrenewal notices as part their restructuring plan.

Three teachers will be cut from the districts seven elementary schools, two special education staff members, one middle school teacher and five high school teachers will also be lost.

This is just the districts latest move. Other changes include the closing of two rural elementary schools, Fort Winnebago and Caledonia.

For students in kindergarten through 5th grade they'll see their class sizes grow by about one student per classroom. 6th graders will move to the middle school and high schoolers will have more class periods per day.

" We're going from a four block day to a seven period day. Teachers will then be teaching six periods, " says Poches.

April 2 the Portage School District will have a referendum on the ballot at that point in time we'll find out if more cuts are to come.

Poches says, " Obviously if the referendum fails we would have significant reductions across the board. "

Right now the district is asking for up to $2.6 million. That would be a continuation of the operational referendum they got three years ago.

According to Poches taxes won't go up and educational services won't be interrupted.

Without the changes they've already made he says they'd be asking for up to $5-million.

NBC15 did reach out to the teachers who have been given those nonrenewal notices through Wisconsin Education Association Council or WEAC. So far no one has agreed to speak with us on camera.
