(Dane Co.) Thousands of dollars worth of phone cards are connecting with Dane County inmates.
A resolution passed by the Dane County Board will allow county jail inmates to make $25,000 worth of phone calls for free.
An equal amount of money will make its way to area troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The measures are the result of a compromise. Some board members argued prisoners and their families are too poor to buy phone cards, while others said the money should go to soldiers.
A panel will be formed to look at how troops can best utilize the funds.
