Doyle Proposes Property Tax Freeze

Video will be available shortly.

AP (Madison) Gov. Doyle is going to propose his own plan to hold down property taxes tonight (Tuesday).

The Democratic governor is embracing a push by Republican lawmakers to strictly limit property tax bills for Wisconsin homeowners.

Doyle included his property tax proposal in the budget he will unveil tonight to fix Wisconsin's $1.6 billion deficit.

Doyle has been highly critical of Republican efforts to limit property taxes over the past two years. He has repeatedly said it would threaten education funding and strip local officials of the power to make the best decisions for their communities.

But Doyle policy director Kirk Brown says the Governor believes the state can hold down property taxes without hurting the services provided by public schools and local governments.

He would do that by providing an additional $850 million to public schools over the next two years and implementing new measures that would reward municipalities that hold down property taxes.
